Angst, heartbreak, even monsters have feelings.

“I’m going to break your heart one day,” Imayoshi says gently, almost like a warning, and runs his hand along Hanamiya’s jawline in a sweet caress.
“Are you now?” Hanamiya’s eyes are grey as Imayoshi’s but there’s a green tint to them, uncanny and unreal. It shows now as Hanamiya tilts his head to the side and smiles up at Imayoshi. “Are you going to grow me one first?”
“Yes. I’ll water it with kisses and sweet words.” Imayoshi leans down and touches a kisses to Hanamiya’s forehead, right where the Mark of Cain should have rested, right where widows smear mourning ash over their skin. “And it’ll break your bones with how hard it beats whenever you see me.”
“Arrogant,” Hanamiya scoffs but there’s an edge to his tone, a faint question of what if he can do it, what if he can reduce the monster to merely a man?
Imayoshi smiles again and pinches Hanamiya’s cheek with deliberate condescension. “You’ll see, Makoto. Now run along with the rest of the kids.”

Imayoshi leaves middle school for high school, leaves Hanamiya behind, and something in Hanamiya’s chest feels a little sore. It’s not quite pain - it’s the ache of an overstretched muscle, something dull and steady. He rubs balm onto his chest, wraps up well against the winter and tells himself firmly that he does not miss Imayoshi.
He is allowed to think that the school is less fun without Imayoshi there but that’s it.
*
When Imayoshi suggests that Hanamiya attend Touou Academy as well, happiness explodes inside Hanamiya like a firework, intense and bright. They’ll have a year before the Miracles start high school to take the Winter Cup and InterHigh both. They’ll have two years together before Imayoshi goes to college.
He’s ecstatic, he realizes, and that acts like walking into an icy lake.
He’s this happy because of Imayoshi? He can be this influenced by the idea of spending time with Imayoshi?
He writes back and says that he’s going to Kirisaki Daiichi, the rich brat school. He’s heard the walls of Touou Academy are too thin for the kind of fun that Hanamiya enjoys.
*
Like mercury coming home, Hanamiya goes to college with Imayoshi. He’s spent three years regretting the unnecessary distance from Imayoshi, three years wishing he’d gone to Touou instead and he’s learnt from that longing that there’s no use suffering unnecessarily.
After all, this isn’t a one-sided affair. Imayoshi’s human. Surely Hanamiya must have some hold on his heart.
*
Imayoshi slides the ring onto his bride’s finger and Hanamiya waits for rage to overtake him.
Instead, it’s a pain so intense that he doubles over it, face against his knees, fists against his mouth to keep himself quiet.

Oh. So this is what a broken heart feels like.
