I didn't kill anyone!

***

If Inui were going by any sort of description of families, and he had read many, then he would have to admit that he and Kaidou had already broken just about every unspoken rule that people seemed to go by. After all, they had met for the first time when they were paired up for a mission together, and while meeting someone at work wasn't unheard of, Inui was fairly certain that meeting someone for the first time, instantly feeling a certain degree of apprehension about working with them knowing they could kill you in an instant, and then trusting them with your life a few hours later after they rescued you from near certain death when everything went wrong was far less common. And then, in place of dating, they had worked together again and again until they reached a point where neither of them partnered with anyone else unless they had to. Sex had come in there at some point as well, but it hadn't really meant anything the first few times. They had both been stressed from work, and it had been a welcome release. They had both known that going in, and at the time, they definitely hadn't expected anything else to come of it.

Then Kinjou had come into the picture, and Inui had finally been forced to admit that all of the references and flowcharts and data tables he had collected over the years were going to be of absolutely no use whatsoever. None of them covered the situation where a work-partner-who-may-or-may-not-be-something-more came home very late one night with a sleeping bundle in his arms and frantic commands to grab their bags and go to the safe house. And they definitely didn't cover spending the next several weeks jumping from place to place in the dead of night and trying to piece together the pieces of the puzzle from the fragments of data Kaidou shared in the brief moments he came back.

When it was all settled finally, or at least as settled as things ever were in their line of work, Inui brought up the question he had been pondering over many a night spent sitting up with Kinjou.

"Should we make this official?"

Kaidou laughed. Or at least, it was something that Inui recognized as a laugh, even if the sound was something more akin to a slightly pained cough.

"What, like a wedding?"

It was Inui's turn to grimace. "No. We've never been that traditional. Can you imagine? All I want is a photo of you two."

Kaidou smiled. "That I can do."

Two days later, Kaidou gave Inui a small wooden box over dinner. Inside was a simple locket. Inui opened it and found a photo of Kaidou on one side, and a slightly blurry photo Kaidou must have taken one night of him asleep with Kinjou on his chest.

"It's perfect," Inui said.
