Sliiiiight exploitation of child labor but not really?

“Are you ready?” Toudou asked, turning back to the two apprentices. Two pairs of blue eyes fixed expectant gazes on him.

Before each boy was a stack of paper, an inkstone, a brush, a small raised table that fit over their knees and a selection of charmed objects. Toudou had taken them to his favorite charm maker and told both boys generously that they could buy whatever they wanted and it would be on him.

Of course, he was going to send the bill for Onoda’s choices to Makishima. Makishima had enough money to pay for his apprentice’s charms and besides, Toudou was already donating his time by teaching Onoda for free.

“I’m ready,” Manami said cheerfully and Onoda bobbed his head in enthusiastic agreement.

“Good. Now, the first thing to remember about folding paper talismans is not to do any folding until they’re completely dry. To cut down on wasted time, you’re each going to do one charm multiple times. By the time you’ve worked your way to the last paper in the stack, the first will be dry and then you can start on folding it,” Toudou explained.

Both boys nodded again to show they’d understood.

“Did you practice writing the sigils that I assigned you as homework?” Toudou asked.

“Yes!” Onoda pulled out his phone and showed Toudou a wall covered in the sigils. At Toudou’s horrified expression, he added quickly, “It’s in chalk, I washed it off right afterwards!”

“I practiced them in the dirt and smoothed it over after each one,” Manami said.

“Fine. Now, all you have do is use the brush to do the exact same sigils right in the center of the paper. Fold the paper lengthwise - but gently - and write the sigils along the line,” Toudou said briskly.

For the next hour, except for the wet swipe of the ink brushes against the paper, there was silence. When they were done, Toudou sat down cross-legged in front of them and picked up a blank sheet that he quickly dotted down the center line to represent the sigils.

“Watch my hands carefully. I am the Mountain God and my talismans are as powerful as those of the divine because my folds are so precise. The sigils are the powerhouse of the spells but the folds direct how that power is shaped and flows.” Carefully, undoing and repeating folds when necessary, Toudou demonstrated how to fold the large sheets into small cranes.

“Good,” he said finally when they were done. Onoda’s was lopsided and Manami’s had oversized wings, but it wasn’t bad for a first try.

“Now you can attach the charms. Remember, don’t put too many or clashing ones on any bird else when they fly, they might explode or fall apart.”

And if that happened, the bride who’d asked for a 100 flying blessed cranes would definitely want her money back!
