The edge of the forest is colder than the rest, the trees a little more dense, like they're trying to keep people from passing. Kise has always been good at getting into places where he shouldn't be, though. The trees don't stop him. The cloak that he has wrapped around his shoulders keeps him warm when the temperature plummets too, his fingers curled around a bottle in his pocket, given to him half a year ago and stoppered tightly to keep its contents safe. He finds the path under the ground, as it freezes under his feet even though it's the middle of summer.

The King of Winter slumbers in the middle of bare branches that grow around him like a cage. Kise has never figured out whether it's to keep him in there, or to keep others out. It's never mattered to him, when his magic is built around showing people what they want, about persuasion. He coaxes the branches apart, sharp and brittle like ice, until he can kneel in the space between them, beside the body of the king.

"Time to wake up, Himurocchi," Kise murmurs with a smile, pulling the bottle out of his pocket.

The fairy dust in the bottle glitters like ice in the winter sunlight. Most of the dust Kise has ever come across is meant to send people to sleep, but this serves the exact opposite purpose: the winters are much gentler if Himuro is woken with this dust with plenty of time before it's time to turn the seasons. Kise has lived through the more bitter winters, when Himuro has woken on his own and sent his cold spreading through the world, harsh and biting. Even now, Kise can feel the temperature dropping even further, his breath misting in front of his face. Himuro's never in a good mood when he wakes but there's a reason that Kise's here, after all.

"Wake up," Kise says again, leaning down to press a kiss to Himuro's cold lips. He stays there, taking his time to relish in the sensation of Himuro's cold lips against his warm ones. It's a feeling that he's missed while Himuro's been asleep. He presses another shorter kiss to Himuro's lips, then sits back and waits.

Himuro blinks awake slowly, inhaling and then exhaling, looking around until he sees Kise.

"Ryouta," he greets, soft but pleased.

"Good morning," Kise says cheerfully, holding out a hand to help him up. "It's still summer. Plenty of time to play before you need to get to work. You've been sleeping for long enough, haven't you? I was starting to miss you."

Himuro's royal robes are covered with ice that clinks together as he gets to his feet. His hands are cold, but Kise can feel the warmth coming back to them as they hold onto each other. "Well. We'd better make up for lost time, then."
