The ring that hangs around Taiga's neck is so small that it only just barely fits onto his pinky these days. He likes it all the same, and likes it even better when Tatsuya's the one who reaches for it when they're lying in bed together, looping the end of his pinky around it and lifting it to his lips to kiss it.
"You've polished it again," Tatsuya murmurs, tilting it in the light so he can look at the way that it shines.
"It keeps rusting more, these days," Taiga sighs. He pulls Tatsuya to lie on top of him, fingers curling in the soft hair at the nape of Tatsuya's neck and scratching idly. "It's getting old, I guess."
"It's been quite a few years," Tatsuya allows, resting his head comfortably against Taiga's shoulder and holding the ring up to look at it again. "I know that when I bought them for us, I intended that we'd wear them forever, but I guess that means something different to children than it does to us now."
"But you still want to?" Taiga asks.
"Of course I do." Tatsuya kisses his neck. "Forever."
Taiga kisses Tatsuya's forehead and lies there, turning it over in his head. There's one obvious thing to do, as far as he's concerned. He just has to make sure that he waits for the right time.
He's never been good at waiting, but this is especially difficult, when he knows just how much they both want this. It's tempting to take Tatsuya into the jewellery shop every time they're out together, to pull him towards the counter and get him to pick out rings that that will actually fit their fingers now.
Tatsuya must know that he's thinking about it; there's a knowing smile on his lips every time they end up wandering close to a jewellery shop, but he's being more patient than Taiga is. He's willing to let Taiga go at his own pace.
The thing is, Taiga knows that this isn't something that he can surprise Tatsuya with. He can't just get the rings and give one to Tatsuya later, but he supposes that's okay. He was there when Tatsuya bought their rings, it only makes sense that Tatsuya be there when Taiga buys their rings.
When he finally gathers the nerve to take Tatsuya by the hand and lead him into the jewellery shop, he's nervous even though he knows there's no need to be. He squeezes Tatsuya's hand, taking comfort in his smile.
"So," Tatsuya murmurs, squeezing Taiga's hand tightly. "Are we getting engagement rings, or are we just going to skip the fuss and go for the wedding rings?"
"You? Skip the fuss?" Taiga laughs softly, pulling Tatsuya against him and kissing the top of his head. "I know you. We're getting both."
