"you ready?" kuramochi asks, jumping down the last of the steps to the entryway by the great hall. he'd caught miyuki standing there from a few steps up, broom in hand, the green and silver quidditch robes on his back. it's a contrast to kuramochi's scarlet and gold robes. slytherin vs gryffindor. the final quidditch match of the year, the one that will determine who wins the inter-house cup.
their last match facing each other. ever. now that it's the end of their seventh year at hogwarts.
"shouldn't you be asking yourself that?" miyuki asks, nudging kuramochi's shoulder now that they're side by side.
"i'm always ready to beat you." kuramochi grins and nudges miyuki's shoulder back. they've been rivals for years, since they started playing, actually. their exchanges on days they play each other are often filled with familiar, comfortable banter and teasing. even more so after the match is over and they know who'd one. their record is about even, now.
"you mean you're ready to lose?" miyuki laughs. "because that's what i heard."
"i don't trust your hearing or your judgement, honestly," kuramochi quips back. he leans against his broom, comfortable as he stands and talks with miyuki before they have to head down to the quidditch pitch.
(they'll walk there, together, just like always. that's where they've spent a lot of days and late night adventures at in their years at hogwarts. despite being in different houses and on rival teams, quiddtich has always been something they've done together.)
"we'll see who's gloating later, youichi." miyuki's broom brushes against kuramochi's leg, and without looking at it, kuramochi knows it like it's his own. the insignia on it. how it's worn from being well-used. miyuki's face when he'd gotten a new one--a better one--after his old broom had broken a few years ago during a match. how happy he had looked. how at ease miyuki always is when he's flying.
it makes kuramochi smile. they have years of memories here. years of memories spent doing this. and now... and now it's the last time. their final time while here at hogwarts.
"i won't go easy on you just because i kind of like you," kuramochi says. his fingers curl around miyuki's own. brief touch that no one can see--were they paying attention--beneath their sleeves. they stand side by side in the stairwell, fingers linked and brooms clutched tightly in their other hands. shoulder to shoulder and ready. "be ready for my best."
"i hope your best is better than what you were throwing when we practiced together the other night." miyuki smiles. "i blocked every single goal you tried to score."
kuramochi would grumble that it's because miyuki's been freakishly good at quidditch ever since they were in second year. for someone who didn't grow up in the wizarding world and only became acquainted with it in his first year at hogwarts, he was way too good--so bright that he'd shine--and as they'd gotten older and played more, it'd become even more apparent.
"i was saving my best until today." he grins, squeezes miyuki's hand. "i can't give away all my secrets now, can i?"
miyuki laughs as kuramochi pulls him forward and they begin the walk down to the quidditch pitch together--still hand in hand. "whatever you say, youichi."
