The night is warm enough to be pleasant, and the streets are lined with stalls, the crowds bustling in between them, the air already rich with the smell of food and the sound of laughter.
Atsushi has never really been fond of crowds. Despite being tall enough to look over most people's heads, he's never liked the feeling of people being too close to him for his liking. When the crowd leading to the matsuri means that Tatsuya is pressed up against his side, however, he can't quite bring himself to mind as much.
Tatsuya is incredibly excited. He links one arm with Atsushi's so that they don't lose each other, and with the other, he points out all the stalls that he wants to visit. He wants to play all the games, eat all the snacks, and Atsushi can respect that. It's been years since Tatsuya has been to a proper matsuri; Atsushi wants to make sure that he has the best experience possible.
"We're allowed to wander around and do our own thing for a while, before we meet up with the rest of the team so we can watch the fireworks together," Tatsuya says, sliding his hand down from Atsushi's arm to comfortably hold his hand instead. "Where do you want to go first?"
Atsushi hums in thought, looking around and picking the most enticing food stand he can see. They start with okonomiyaki and work their way around to every other food stall there is, stopping here and there when Tatsuya comes across a game that he wants to play. It doesn't surprise Atsushi that he's good at all of them, or that he treats them as seriously as he would treat any game of basketball.
"Don't you ever get tired of putting all that effort into everything you do?" Atsushi complains, as Tatsuya walks away from a shooting game with a giant bear plush.
Tatsuya laughs. "I never do."
Atsushi snorts quietly as they keep walking. "I guess that it wouldn't be you otherwise, and that wouldn't be any fun."
Tatsuya smiles at him, and they keep going, until the sun starts to set and the sky begins to darken.
"Hey," Atsushi says, taking Tatsuya by the hand and pulling. "Before we go meet up with everyone else, I wanted to do something."
Tatsuya raises an eyebrow, following him without question, until they've walked far enough from the matsuri that they're alone. Atsushi produces a firework from his pocket, and a lighter with the other, holding them both up.
"I know you had fireworks in America all the time because they really like them over there, but this is your first time going to see the fireworks here. I… wanted to be the first."
Tatsuya smiles, as Atsushi sets the sparkler burning, taking it from Atsushi's hand and holding it up.
"Thank you, Atsushi," he murmurs. "For this, and for all of tonight. I had fun."
"Me too," Atsushi murmurs, kissing the top of Tatsuya's head. He knew he would, but he's surprised by just how much. "Because it was with you."
