At first, Atsushi's happy enough just standing there. It's an easy job, even if the outfit he has to wear looks terrible. He doesn't have to do any tricks this way, he doesn't need to call people to actually come into the tent, he just needs to stand there with a bucket full of candy and tell people that they'll get some if they go in to see all the circus tricks that his group are performing inside.
It's the perfect kind of job for him, and Akashi even tells him that he can have a piece of candy himself for every five people that he brings into the circus tent.
Except they have a rival tent pitched just across from them. It's not any bigger than theirs and it doesn't look particularly flashy, but it immediately becomes the more popular one and it has everything to do with the guy they put out the front. His name's Tatsuya and his outfit is almost as bad as Atsushi's, but his smile is beautiful and he juggles four balls in the air, not even having to watch them as he smiles at the people walking past him at the fair, urging them to come inside and see the rest of the tricks that his circus has to offer. Most people walk towards him from the moment he makes eye contact with them and Atsushi begrudgingly admits to himself that he understands the appeal. He'd probably walk over too, if he was allowed to. The guy constantly makes eye contact with him, too, smiling at him as if he understands what Atsushi's dealing with, as if they're on the same side.
Atsushi knows better. He's going to crush his competition. The first step is to learn how to juggle.
It's how Tatsuya finds him on his break, behind the circus tent, trying and failing to juggle just three balls. He hasn't even gotten up to four yet.
"Do you want me to teach you?" Tatsuya asks, and Atsushi drops all three of his balls with surprise.
"You're not meant to be back here, go sit at the back of your own tent," Atsushi replies.
Tatsuya smiles. "Here. I'll show you."
He pulls all four of his juggling balls out of the pockets of his oversized pants, and throws them into the air, juggling slowly and talking Atsushi through it as he does so. Atsushi is jealous that he can pay attention to what he's doing while also explaining it. He knows that if it were him, he'd drop them the moment he looked away.
"All you need to do is practice," Tatsuya tells him with a smile. "Keep practicing until it comes naturally to you."
Atsushi would much rather practice other things with Tatsuya, but he keeps the thought to himself. He steps closer to Tatsuya and looks down at him, frowning in consideration.
Before he can even issue a challenge, Tatsuya smiles at him and says, "How about this? If you learn how to juggle all four of those balls by the end of the week, I'll take you out for dinner."
"Deal," Atsushi replies immediately, and doesn't even care if he sounds too eager, because Tatsuya looks just as pleased.
