There's something incredibly satisfying about summoning a god onto the field.

It feels as if the clouds themselves part as he summons The Winged Dragon of Ra, and the heavens shake with its cry, spreading its golden wings and standing on the field, waiting to fight for Atsushi, ready to take any command that he gives it.

He smiles at his opponent from across the field, some other contestant that he'd never bothered to learn the name of, whose name won't be important after this duel, after all. Atsushi will make sure of that, in one way or another.

There's a darkness that simmers just under the surface, and he can feel it responding to some sort of call. It's always the strongest when he has The Winged Dragon of Ra on the field, or when he's noticed that one of the other two god cards have been summoned during a duel between other people. Like he's being drawn towards the very gods themselves. It's a nice thought, to have that sort of power notice him and seek him out. He'll go soon, he thinks. He just needs to crush this opponent first.

He doesn't realise that he's changing until he pairs up with Tatsuya later. They've both been successful on their own but they've always been more successful together, Atsushi knows this from experience. They crush everyone who stands in their way, collecting ante and locator cards as they go.

"I was worried for you," Tatsuya says casually, as they walk beside each other.

"I don't need you to," Atsushi replies, even though he knows that's not going to change a thing. "Just worry about yourself."

Tatsuya looks at him, and he's smiling when Atsushi meets his eyes, but there's something troubled in his expression. "I feel like you've changed, Atsushi."

"In a good or bad way?"

Tatsuya presses his lips together into a thin line. "I'm not sure yet."

As it turns out, Atsushi is changing for the worse. He feels it himself, whenever he's reaching the tail end of a duel; the desire to not only beat his opponents but to crush them entirely, to make them feel so insignificant that none of their efforts matter at all.

He manages to push the feeling down, until Tatsuya ends up getting hurt. Atsushi sees him drop and immediately rages.

When he comes to, he's not the same person any more. He has the kind of headache that typically comes from his hair being pulled in the wrong direction, but it won't go away no matter what he does. More than that, he feels an overwhelming amount of anger.

He'll show everyone just how futile it is to struggle, when their loss is already guaranteed.

They can fight against Atsushi all they want, but there's no point in fighting a god.
