kinjou knew it was late to be biking, but the next race was a week away and he needed to train up if he was going to do well enough to place. his endurance had been taking a hit the past few days as his knee would twinge with pain and force him to stop.

he couldn't afford to be doing that now, not with some of the biggest races of the season just around the corner.

no light came from the clubroom windows, yet when kinjou tried his key he realized the door was unlocked. that was odd - everyone knows how important it is to lock up at night to keep the bikes safe.

he pushes the door open, and a snarling voice greets him.

"there you are."

"yasutomo." kinjou sighed, feeling better that it was someone he knew in here - a feeling that didn't last as he took in arakita's expression. it was twisted up in rage over annoyance, his hand fisted around thick fabric - no, a brace.

"what the fuck are you thinking kin-chan!? we got a race coming up, tout can't go out at night alone pushing yourself!"

"i have to practice if we're going to win."

"you ain't even gonna get to enter if you break your knee! then what? huh? you gonna practice your way out of that too??"

kinjou bristles, pressing his mouth into a hard line. arakita knew what happened to him in high school, why his knee gets bad and makes it hard for kinjou to ride sometimes. but that doesn't mean he has the right to be chiding him like this, even if they are teammates.

"i know what i'm doing, that won't happen." kinjou says coolly, because he won't.

"bullshit!" arakita yells, throwing the brace at kinjou's face. he barely catches it in time, and finds himself surprised for not the first time at the strength of his arm. "you'll keep working until you think your damn good enough, or over it, instead of resting like you should until you snap! this ain't good kin-chan. you gotta take a break."

"and what," kinjou's voice is thin, he doesn't want to fight but on this topic, on riding, it's too easy for him to get riled up. "do you know about injuties? what makes you think you can lecture me on this?"

(he knows he's not the captain, that they're equals, but he still knows the voice to use to make himself sound in charge to get the edge.)

arakita's face suddenly goes slack, shock overcoming the anger. "what. do i know?"

it hits kinjou like a supernova - arakita bursts forward to grab him by the collar, get within in an inch of his face, and arakita roars.

"what do I KNOW? i know a fucking idiot when i see one, one too goddamn blind by wanting to win and be the best or some bullshit that he doesn't fucking listen, not to anyone, not to his own damn BODY, until one day he's busted beyond repair and can't do shit!! dreams over, no going back to baseball, no goddamn nothing left because he was an absolute DIPSHIT!!!!"

arakita's chest heaves as he pulls in the worst sounding breath kinjou has ever heard from him. it freezes him there, looking at arakita and his shaky hands like he's seeing him for the first time, at the cusp of something massive that kinjou had yet to fully understand yet.

arakita's voice is nothing more than a whisper. "it's gonna be you next if you don't quit being so fucking stupid, kin-chan."

kinjou doesn't know what to do, what to say, as arakita lets him go and walks right out of the clubroom.
