Shuuzou hates this part of being a ranger, the part that elevates him to the status of a celebrity just because he's one of the few people in the world who can suit up in a giant robot to keep their world safe.

He can see why people would want to celebrate it, sure, but truth be told, he'd rather be left out of it. It would be preferable to the way that he feels left out of it, like he's missing something, standing in the middle of a party in between drinks, in between Tatsuya grabbing him by the arm and pulling him into photos. He's never felt so desynchronised from Tatsuya ever since the first time they were assigned to each other to test their drift compatibility and passed almost immediately after stepping out onto the floor across from each other.

That's the part he hates the most; Tatsuya's lapping up the attention, making easy small talk like this is what he was made for, and Shuuzou is the awkward one skulking in the background. They don't feel evenly matched here, Shuuzou doesn't feel like he's the partner that Tatsuya deserves, when he would probably be having more fun with someone brighter, louder, who liked the attention as much as he does.

It's a thought that has him reaching for the nearest glass of champagne, and he'd think that after fighting several alien monsters that come from the middle of the ocean, he'd learn that he can't drown his sorrows, but fuck if it doesn't stop him from trying anyway.

He wanders away from the party, seeking the quiet, and ends up walking towards their jaeger. It's a comforting presence, a home for all of their shared memories, and he loves this machine more than he thought he could ever love something that wasn't sentient. He takes a seat by its foot, leaning back against the cool metal, shutting his eyes and exhaling slowly as he tries to relax.

There's no such thing as deserving better, when it comes to co-pilots. He tries to remind himself of that. There's only those who you're drift compatible with, and those you aren't. It might not be the only deciding factor when it comes to choosing partners, but Shuuzou likes to think that he's won out in that regard; his co-pilot is something he admires, someone he trusts with his life, with his mind, with his entire being, translated into his consciousness and transmitted directly into Tatsuya's mind. Shuuzou might be awkward and reserved, but Tatsuya approaches life with a fake it 'til you make it attitude that covers up his fear that he'll never be good enough, for anyone, or anything.

He tightens his grip around the glass he's holding and shuts his eyes, feeling himself relax.

They're not so different, after all.
