The first time they kiss feels like a revelation.
They don't need the drift for this, Shuuzou thinks to himself. They don't even need words. There are other ways to communicate, and it's a thought that makes his heart feel light and warm.
He doesn't need to worry about what Tatsuya's thinking any more, doesn't need to try winding his way through the labyrinthine complexities of Tatsuya's mind in the drift, when he can lay things out in a much simpler way. Shuuzou isn't always good with his words, but he can hold Tatsuya's face between his hands and kiss him, and sometimes, that feels like it's enough.
It doesn't always have to be kissing. Sometimes, it's enough to reach for Tatsuya's hand and feel him squeeze Shuuzou's hand in return. Sometimes, it's just a hand resting on Shuuzou's back for a brief moment as Tatsuya walks by, or the way Shuuzou will rest his chin on Tatsuya's shoulder and read his copy of a report instead of looking at his own.
It's the little things, Shuuzou tells himself, that make them work with each other as well as they do. Tatsuya doesn't feel like a mystery any more, their relationship, their partnership, none of it feels like it's something Shuuzou is going along with, simply hoping that it will work out for them. He can see the path that they're on, now. He can see where they started, in the kwoon room and then years before that, when they first met on quieter, safer streets back before the kaiju were ever a threat. He can see himself with Tatsuya, in the cockpit of their jaeger, and outside of it too.
He breathes, in and out, and beside him, Tatsuya leans into his side with an inquisitive hum.
It's the kissing that still feels the best, though. Shuuzou answers with a smile, closing the distance between their lips, lifting his hand up to cup Tatsuya's cheek.
"Shuu," Tatsuya murmurs, sounding surprised and pleased, the way he always does whenever Shuuzou initiates their kisses, no matter how many times it's been.
Shuuzou kisses him harder, turning in his seat so that he can pull Tatsuya closer, hands stroking across his back.
With a quiet laugh, Tatsuya breaks their kiss and stands up.
"We're in your room, Shuu. No need to hold back."
When Shuuzou kisses him again, it's deeper, more demanding, and Tatsuya opens up for it gladly, arms wrapped around his shoulders, lips curved into a smile as if he, too, prefers communicating like this.
