Ryousuke knows a few things.
He loves the roar of the engine, the smooth shift of gears under his hands as he switches gears, one foot on the clutch and the other on the accelerator, pushing the car as hard it can go. He’s good at it he knows, shifting gears effortlessly as he picks up speed, the movements as easy and familiar as breathing. He loves the feel of the steering wheel under his hands, smooth and easy, directing the car wherever he wants to go. Up, right, up again, until he’s going as fast as he can, leaning back in the wheel as the miles disappear.
He loves it too, when Youichi’s the one in the driver’s seat, the windows rolled down and they’re laughing as they speed away, city in the rearview as they drive to nowhere. Youichi drives faster, wilder, more recklessly. He’s all instinct and heart, speeding up and braking as he feels best, going as fast as he can just because he can, because it makes him feel alive. Whereas Ryousuke is measured and deliberate in his actions, knowing exactly how much, how far to push, when to slow down and how fast he can go, control, control.
He thinks he doesn’t know how to live without this, sitting shotgun while Youichi’s at the wheel, laughing while the radio blares whatever new punk rock song Youichi’s into. He knows Youichi keeps stealing glances at him, even though he’s pretending he’s checking the side mirror. This is theirs, their wild youth in a car speeding to nowhere, leaving a city and their respective lives behind them. It is his recklessness, the sharp curve of his mouth, Youichi’s hand on his as he changes gears, kissing by the side of the road, the car hood warm underneath him.
Hey Ryou-san?
Yeah?
Say we’ll never stop doing this.
Careful. That sounds a lot like a proposal.
I’d go anywhere with you, y’know?
He knows, he knows. Which is why he never says yes, lets Youichi interpret the silence however he likes. But his hands are gentle as they smooth out the lapels of Youichi’s jacket, careful on the curve of his neck. That is his concession to this, before Youichi hands him the keys and he’s sliding behind the wheel, adjusting the seat and the rearview mirror. The engine starts beautifully, gear, clutch and lift as he pulls out smoothly, speeding up gradually until they’re doing one twenty and Ryousuke’s got the high lights on, scenery a blur around them.
He knows he wouldn’t give this up for the world, not Youichi, not these nights where they go nowhere, where they go so fast that Ryousuke can hear the wind roaring, Youichi next to him. He can feel them accumulating in his heart, in his blood, until they are things he cannot do without.
But he has no confession to make, only glaces over at Youichi, then presses harder on the accelerator while Youichi starts to laugh next to him, young and wild and reckless.
