Kuroo hates when Daishou looks at him like that. The furrowed brows, the narrowed eyes, the curled lips; that kind of pinched, tortured face Daishou makes so often that Kuroo starts to wonder when it’ll get stuck like that.

If he’s trying to get Kuroo to shoulder the blame for their current predicament, it’s certainly working.

“I’m gonna order food,” Kuroo says, voiced slurred as he comes down from his post-orgasm high, “What d’you want?”

“Nothing,” Daishou mumbles, but that’s what he always says.

The routine is so familiar and well-worn that Kuroo could go through the motions in his sleep. Daishou and Mika will call it quits for the umpteenth time, Daishou will text Kuroo, always with the kind of urgency as if his house were on fire and Kuroo was the only person who could put it out. They’ll meet up, they’ll fuck, and Daishou will get dressed (or just zip up his pants, on the occasion that they don’t even bother to get undressed). Kuroo will order takeout and Daishou always manages to linger long enough until it arrives, snapping open his chopsticks wordlessly to dive into the extra portion Kuroo’s ordered for him.

“If I had 100 yen every time you and Mika-chan had a split and you came running to me,” Kuroo says through a mouthful of lo mein, “I could pay for all the extra food I always have to get for you.”

Daishou stiffens, “I never asked you to get food for me.”

“I know,” a shrug, “I’m just that nice. Can’t send you home on an empty stomach, can I?”

It’s another familiar script of theirs. Daishou is always so on edge and defensive about everything. Didn’t realize I was forcing your hand to text me back, or I never asked you to come over, I just said I was lonely. As if the subtext wasn’t clear, as if Kuroo ever really had a choice.

Although, that’s not entirely true.

When the latest text comes through from Daishou, a particularly clipped It’s over. Again. Kuroo manages to go a few hours without texting back. It’s a new record.

“You won’t text him back,” Kuroo tells himself. Quite literally: he plants himself in front of the bathroom mirror and points a finger at his reflection, repeating whatever mantras he can remember from the most recent self-help audiobook he’s taken to listening to on his morning runs.

“I’m going to say no, and I’m going to mean it,,” he says, staring at his own pupils in a way that is both ridiculous and unsettling.

It would be so much easier to say ‘no’ if Kuroo didn’t want to see Daishou. But the problem is that he does.

A few more hours go by, and it’s past midnight when Kuroo’s resolve breaks, his fingers moving faster than his brain as he punches out a text to Daishou. Something innocuous, pulled from the script he’s already memorized.

Daishou’s response comes almost instantly, and Kuroo grips his phone with white knuckles.

Actually, Mika came over about an hour ago.
I think we’re going to be okay. For a while this time.

It’s their quickest get-back-together to date, and Kuroo is almost impressed. At least, until he sucks in a breath as the last text comes in: Looks like you’re off the hook, Kuroo. Sorry. And thank you.

Mika is a good influence on him, Kuroo thinks, trying to imagine what kind of look Daishou might have had on his face when typing out that text. Was he happy? Feeling bittersweet? Were his shoulders dropped, relieved, or were they tense with worry about where to go from here? Was he smiling or frowning or somewhere in between? Was he imagining what kind of expression Kuroo might have, reading his texts, or was Kuroo the farthest thing from his mind?

Kuroo stops wondering. He turns off his phone, burrows under the covers and tries not to think about how he doesn’t feel relieved, not even a little bit, not even at all.
