“Absolutely not,” Abe said crisply. “This is meant to mimic the experience real users would have, Mihashi-san. A real user would not go back into the game if he found his nose bleeding after he’d passed out. He’d get medical help, then go online and complain until he got enough courage to call the company and threaten to sue.”
“I signed a medical waiver,” Mihashi said, his voice wavering a little. “I don’t think I can threaten to sue.”
Abe stared at him for a second and then smiled. It was brief and rough, but it unexpectedly softened his face so he wasn’t quite as terrifying.
“...Can’t be that bad if you’re making jokes,” he muttered and then offered his arm to Mihashi. “Come on. Let’s take you to the lab.”
“Lab?” Mihashi asked as he grasped Abe’s arm just above the elbow and let himself be helped up. The world swayed around him as if it were about to reform so Mihashi shut his eyes again.
“Hey!” Abe’s voice was sharp now, loud enough to jolt Mihashi into quickly opening his eyes again.
“Don’t pass out on me,” Abe said, more quietly now that Mihashi’s eyes were open. “The lab’s where they do medical checkups. I just want to get a scan of your brain to make sure there wasn’t any damage.”
“And then I’ll go back in?” Mihashi asked, determined to not fail after making it this far.
“No, then you’ll go home and rest.” Abe’s eyes narrowed, making Mihashi flinch even as he still held onto Abe’s arm for support. “And tomorrow, when I’ve fixed whatever bug made that happen, you’ll come back and test it again.”
Tomorrow. Okay. He wasn’t being fired. He was just being given a break while Abe fixed the code. Yeah. That was okay.
Mihashi stumble-walked down the hallway with Abe’s arm around his shoulders and under his arm, keeping him upright even when the ground swayed under his feet.
“Is your balance that’s affected? Are you having trouble telling where the floor is?” Abe asked after a few meters.
“N-no,” Mihashi said, fighting the urge to close his eyes again. “But everything keeps changing. Like how the room changed into a field.”
Abe stopped abruptly. “Is that why you closed your eyes earlier?”
Mihashi nodded and immediately regretted it as the world broke apart, blurry-edged pieces sliding over each other instead of fitting together again.
“...Close your eyes,” Abe said. “I’ll carry you the rest of the way.”
