Shindou raises his head. “Is there any of the strawberry bread left?” he mumbles, then puts his head back down and seems to fall asleep. Touya toys with the idea of cramming some into his mouth because that would be funny, but Shindou’s pretty drunk and it would be just like him to inhale some, then choke and die.
Instead, Touya snaps a picture and finishes his beer. He texts his father with the attachment and tells him that the Net-Go player Sai will probably like this one, even though he won’t. Sai had promised to keep his distance back when Shindou was still in middle school, and he’s kept that promise, but that doesn’t mean he’s kept out of Shindou’s life. And he only likes to see when Shindou is happy and thriving. Which he is, thanks to Touya, but that doesn’t mean he wants even more evidence of all of the times Shindou passes out drunk on their table. But it’s not Touya’s fault that Shindou can’t hold his alcohol, it’s only Touya’s fault that they drink as much as they do.
Touya looks through the display on his camera, seeing what pictures can go into the keep pile tonight. There’s Shindou laughing over a huge bowl of ramen, Shindou teasing Waya before he heads back to the home office, Shindou with his tongue poking out over the goban when they go into endgame (Touya won).
Then Touya packs away Shindou’s extra food, helps him to his feet, and gets him home. When Shindou wakes up in the morning, tucked into bed and wearing his blue-striped pajamas, he’ll take the aspirin and drink the water Touya left him and won’t even think about it. They’ve been doing this for fifteen years, after all, and Touya’s been watching Shindou for far longer. But the two of them, they’re okay. They’ll always be okay as long as Shindou never guesses Touya’s secret, never knows that Touya knows everything about Sai. Still knows about Sai.
Just before Touya leaves, Shindou rouses a little. He shoots Touya a crooked smile and a sleepy blink, and mumbles, “You’re my best friend.” Then he struggles to his elbows and kisses Touya on the mouth. Touya tries to pull away, he really does – he always does – but he’s helpless against Shindou’s stupid drunk smile and this time he even uses his tongue. “I love you, Touya,” Shindou says before he flops back onto his bed and passes out for the night. He won’t remember any of this in the morning.
“Stupid Shindou,” Touya says, staring down. He takes another picture. This one’s for him. “Hikaru.”
