marks, I loved your dorothy and cowardly lion, but the scarecrow and tin man stole my heart all those weeks ago, and I’ve wanted this for them ever since

he closes his eyes and it settles in him like relief where once a windstorm blew too fast, too much now everything is quiet it feels like pulling back a snagged thread into an old sweater and hinata finally has a brain and hinata can finally think and hinata is no longer made of straw and fluff and buttons but feels his body change once more to warm muscles, bones, and skin
he breathes just once in this calm dark of his eyelids then looks at the party around him yamaguchi receiving his courage tsukishima waiting for his home
and kageyama
hand pressed tight to his mouth fist clenched tight to his chest eyes shut tight to the room shoulders hunched in and quivering knees bent and knocked on the floor
hinata can think now, hinata can reason hinata remembers he knows this is pain
kageyama! he shouts, rushes over kageyama, where does it hurt? tell me! please! kageyama leans in where hinata has reached out and rests his forehead on hinata’s stomach peels his hand from his mouth to slide it over hinata’s worn burlap shirt to cling to hinata’s worn jean pocket in here, he says, and thumps his fist on his dull, filled chest (his flesh and bone chest, which holds a beating heart)
hinata’s hand comes to touch the top of his soft hair smooths over to the curve of the back of his skull as kageyama’s face presses more into the give of his belly as hinata realizes this quiver sounds more like a laugh but hinata, I’m so glad, I’m so glad, kageyama says, and pulls on his pocket, to bring him down hinata goes to one knee, and then to the other and lets kageyama’s arm wrap around his shoulders puts his own hand on the fist kageyama keeps on his breast you’re glad, bakayama? hinata’s voice says, as he feels kageyama nod into where his shoulder meets his neck as he feels kageyama sob a laugh and pull him closer I’m glad, he repeats it hurt more to just think and not feel that I love you hinata, I feel it, I love you, I’m so glad
hinata can think now and hinata can reason and he hears in kageyama’s voice where once this might have cost him to say it comes freely and willingly, though heavy and sharp and he knows words aren’t what kageyama’s new heart is after
hinata pulls on kageyama’s clenched fist and replaces it with his own palm and fingers splayed over the offending hurt and brings kageyama’s fist close to himself pushes his little stubborn fingers through the knots of kageyama’s own and kisses each one of kageyama’s white knuckles and tells him I know, I know, I know

he closes his eyes and
it settles in him like relief
where once a windstorm blew too fast, too much
now everything is quiet
it feels like pulling back a snagged thread into an old sweater
and hinata finally has a brain
and hinata can finally think
and hinata is no longer made of straw and fluff and buttons
but feels his body change once more
to warm muscles, bones, and skin
he breathes just once in this calm dark of his eyelids
then looks at the party around him
yamaguchi receiving his courage
tsukishima waiting for his home
and kageyama
hand pressed tight to his mouth
fist clenched tight to his chest
eyes shut tight to the room
shoulders hunched in and quivering
knees bent and knocked on the floor
hinata can think now,
hinata can reason
hinata remembers
he knows this is pain
kageyama! he shouts, rushes over
kageyama, where does it hurt? tell me! please!
kageyama leans in where hinata has reached out
and rests his forehead
on hinata’s stomach
peels his hand from his mouth
to slide it over hinata’s worn burlap shirt
to cling to hinata’s worn jean pocket
in here, he says, and thumps his fist on his dull, filled chest
(his flesh and bone chest, which holds a beating heart)
hinata’s hand comes to touch the top of his soft hair
smooths over to the curve of the back of his skull
as kageyama’s face presses more into the give of his belly
as hinata realizes this quiver sounds more like a laugh
but hinata, I’m so glad, I’m so glad, kageyama says,
and pulls on his pocket, to bring him down
hinata goes to one knee, and then to the other
and lets kageyama’s arm wrap around his shoulders
puts his own hand on the fist kageyama keeps on his breast
you’re glad, bakayama? hinata’s voice says,
as he feels kageyama nod into where his shoulder meets his neck
as he feels kageyama sob a laugh and pull him closer
I’m glad, he repeats
it hurt more to just think and not feel that I love you
hinata, I feel it, I love you, I’m so glad
hinata can think now
and hinata can reason
and he hears in kageyama’s voice
where once this might have cost him to say
it comes freely and willingly, though heavy and sharp
and he knows words aren’t what kageyama’s new heart is after
hinata pulls on kageyama’s clenched fist
and replaces it with his own
palm and fingers splayed over the offending hurt
and brings kageyama’s fist close to himself
pushes his little stubborn fingers through the knots of kageyama’s own
and kisses each one of kageyama’s white knuckles
and tells him I know, I know, I know
