He couldn’t tell if this ice deep in his chest was more metaphorical or real.
It couldn’t be real like the way his hands shook on the court, or as real as the smudges on his glasses.
But it hurt, like a creeping longing; the ice that stretched between his lungs. Maybe his heart would freeze too and everything would just stop.
He wasn’t sure if the memory of his warmth was more imagination or truth, but it felt like if anything could melt this ice, it would be his warm smile; his eyes, bright and wide.

He couldn’t tell if this ice
deep in his chest was more
metaphorical or real.
It couldn’t be real like
the way his hands shook on the court,
or as real as the smudges on his glasses.
But it hurt,
like a creeping longing;
the ice that stretched between his lungs.
Maybe his heart would freeze too
and everything would just
stop.
He wasn’t sure if the memory
of his warmth was more imagination
or truth, but it felt
like if anything could melt this ice,
it would be his warm smile;
his eyes, bright
and wide.
