“Rei-chan, teach me about statistics.” Nagisa says. It’s summer and they’ve just returned to Rei’s house after a jog, now languidly trying to regain feeling in their limbs by lazing around the living room. The air conditioning is set to arctic and Nagisa is sprawled across the sofa reading a magazine upside-down. Rei sets down his training log.

“I hope you know we are currently learning about basic calculus concepts in math class,” he says evenly, ever patient. “I would be willing to give you instruction on that, as we have a unit exam soon.”

Nagisa makes a small sound at the back of his throat in protest and all but crawls off the sofa to sidle up to Rei on the floor.

“No, just teach me about statistics and probabilities and stuff. I’m interested! Percentages are cool.”

Rei’s brow furrows and Nagisa instinctively reaches up to smooth it out.

“I suppose I could. What do you want to know?”

“Practical applications, y’know? Like how likely is it that it will rain tomorrow?” Nagisa starts to card his hands through Rei’s hair, which is soft and fine like cat fur. Rei closes his eyes and hums contentedly.

“That’s meteorology not probability.”

“Well, maybe you could tell me how likely it is that we met?”

“That’s difficult, since there are many factors influencing the convergence of our paths and how—”

“Okay never mind. What about how likely it is that we became friends?”

“You cut me off!” Rei huffs indignantly. “I don’t need math for that. It was highly improbable. In fact, I am still surprised. I am bad at befriending people, especially very loud people.”

Nagisa blows air into his ear in retaliation, and Rei flinches. “I told you to stop doing that!”

“You were being mean! Now, how likely is it that you fell in love with me?” Nagisa asks in provocation, wiggling his eyebrows.

Rei’s mouth quirks upwards and Nagisa almost braces himself for something devastating.

“That was inevitable.”

Nagisa stares blankly into middle distance for a split second before covering his face and wailing.

“How unfair, Rei-chan! You totally outdid me! When did you get so sly?”

“You’ve been a bad influence on me,” Rei says in that infuriatingly know-it-all way he has and Nagisa wants him to shut up so he grabs him by the collar of his shirt and kisses him. Hard.

Rei kisses back, and the world goes distant. Nagisa knows, vaguely, that the universe is unapologetically vast, that the way he feels when Rei smiles at him is the product of millions upon millions of improbabilities, that there are 38 days until graduation, that math is never straightforward despite what his teachers say.

But, he thinks as Rei shifts under him, the sun is shining and this is far from a coincidence.

sorry if it's a bit too cloying and my writing's ungainly ahh. i hope you like this and my interpretation of the quote anyway! \('ă……'*)/
