Hinata is a terrible student.

Tobio is a good teammate. He watches Hinata sleep in class and, when the teacher turns to write a long string of English on the board, kicks his chair to get him awake. "Dumbass," he hisses, "Wake up!"

"Wha--" Hinata wakes up with a little snuffle that the teacher, thankfully, doesn't hear. If Tobio sees Hinata suspended from volleyball because of his grades, he'd end up tossing to Tsukishima more often than he'd like. "Kageyama?"

Tobio puts a finger to his lips and hisses, "Shhhh." The teacher is still writing, stopping to underline a phrase that he can't make out--to which the intent was not--and he huffs a little sigh. He can see Hinata's head wobble. "Don't fall back asleep, idiot."

"I'm not an idiot," Hinata automatically replies, head jerking back up to glare at him. "You are."

"No, you are!"

"You are!"

"Ahem." The English teacher has long since stopped writing. Stupid Hinata is so loud, all the time. Tobio automatically clams up, suppressing a grin while Hinata mumbles an apology. It's nothing compared to Daichi-senpai and his epic glare. "Keep that up and you'll be out in the hallway."

"Yes, sir!"

Their compliance is briefly-lived. Hinata is already jiggling his leg under his desk, soft school shoes scuffed from their daily lunchtime race (a run that Tobio has consistently tied with Hinata, who proves particularly adept at ducking through crowds of people to snag the last yakisoba bun). Tobio takes lunch seriously; athletes can't compete without proper nutrition. Hinata would eat pork buns all day, if he could.

Hinata's head droops while the teacher explains past participles. Tobio's notes are conspicuously clean of any English, but he does have an idea. He quietly, carefully removes a sheet of paper from his notebook and scribbles a grid on it, nine lopsided squares. Hinata shakes himself awake as Tobio folds up the little note and throws it, with complete accuracy, on Hinata's desk.

Hinata unfolds it and brightens noticeably, drowsiness gone from his face. Tobio waits, tries not to peek at the square Hinata will choose (although if Hinata is smart at all, he will choose the middle one). He's proved right--Hinata going on the offense, as usual--and thins his lips out in concentration as he carefully considers his eight options.

He marks the lower left corner and throws the little note back to Hinata, the paper soaring in a perfect arc before landing home. Hinata cups his hands and catches it, as if Nishinoya-senpai were watching, and grins. He chooses the middle left box, above Tobio's little mark, and throws it back with too much force. The English teacher's voice is a comfortable droning noise in the background, but was not yet sent to her. Tobio marks the upper right box and flicks it toward Hinata's desk with anticipatory satisfaction.

Hinata giggles quietly when he unfolds Tobio's note. He marks a square and hurriedly forms a little sphere of paper, white as a volleyball. He grins so hard his eyes turn into little half-moons, teeth flashing white as Tobio flattens the note.

"I win," Hinata mouths gleefully, flashing a peace sign that Tobio itches to crush with his hands. Hinata looks so content in his victory that Tobio is temporarily distracted--he remembers himself when the English teacher turns the page, Hinata still grinning. He crumples the paper with Hinata's winning little mark in the center right column and considers throwing it away.

Hinata is already tearing out a little scrap of paper. Tobio stashes their first game under his notebook and nods when Hinata quietly whispers, "Again?"
