Remixed from this fill by [personal profile] kiriska as prompted by yours truly, blanket permission has been given! I highly doubt this is what Kiri would have intended but listen, I saw an opportunity and I took it. I'm not sorry.

"Makishima-san?" Onoda calls out.

His voice isn't very loud in the empty club room, but Makishima startles so badly he visibly jerks, before mashing the off button of his phone with his thumb. He yanks his earbuds out of his ears and fights himself not to just cram his phone in his back pocket with the headphones still dangling off the side.

"Onoda," Makishima says, reprovingly. He's turning his phone phone over in his hands, fidgeting with it, but a moment later it sinks in who he's speaking to, and his hands still in their nervous motions.

"I'm sorry, Makishima-san," Onoda says. "I didn't... mean to startle you. But! Oh! I saw something in Akihabara the other day and I had to buy it to show to you!"

"You did?" Makishima asks, mouth starting to twist up into a grin.

It's just like Onoda — getting so excited that he's nearly tripping over himself, nearly trips up Makishima, in trying to get to the point. Getting so excited about sharing things he loves that it hardly occurs to him whether his audience will love them nearly as well. He only ever remembers after the fact, backpedaling hard once it's too late.

"What is it?" Makishima asks, as he starts to roll up his headphone cord to put them away. He'll finish the game later, after Onoda is done. "What did you want to show me?"

"O-Oh," Onoda says, becoming aware of himself. "I didn't mean to... Interrupt you... If you were busy with something. It was just—"

He starts to rummage in his bag, reaching around for something. Makishima takes that moment to slide his phone and the headphones into his pocket, pushing up from the chair where he'd been sitting and leaning over Onoda. There's a little more groping and fumbling, then Onoda pulls his hand free.

"Here," he says, holding it out toward Makishima and letting his fingers spread open. "For you."

There's a figurine perched in the center of his palm, dangling from a phone strap. Makishima reaches out to pluck it from Onoda's hand, holding it up for inspection. He recognizes the short brown hair, smiling face, and cute attire of the charm immediately.

"I'm not really as into this kind of stuff as you are..." Makishima starts to say, making his excuses.

"I know, I know, it's just—" Onoda is saying at the same time, staring up at Makishima with eyes brilliantly wide.

The rest of what Makishima wanted to say dies unspoken on his tongue. He looks down at the charm again, at the likeness of Koizumi Hanayo, one of the characters from the phone game Onoda had gotten him started playing. He can feel his phone digging into his side from where he tucked it, very aware that much as he might say he isn't into the otaku things Onoda wants to share with him, he was playing a song in the game when Onoda came in.

When Makishima remains silent, Onoda pipes up again right where he left off.

"—It's just, you seemed to like Hanayo-chan kind of a lot, and I saw her in the used goods store and she was the only one left from this set, and I just— I just, thought that maybe you would want to have her."

He looks up at Makishima, voice dwindling into something softer as the words run out but face unmistakably bright and open. Makishima shakes his head, unable to resist that puppydog look.

"I'll take it," he says. "It's not like I can't use another phone charm."

And well... Onoda was right. Of all the characters in the game he'd gotten Makishima into, Hanayo was the one Makishima found himself with a soft spot for. There was just something about her earnestness, her sincerity, the way she wanted nothing more than to eat as much white rice as she could fit into her stomach... Something about her reminded Makishima of something, that was all.

"I knew you'd like it!" Onoda says. "I'm glad you want her. Take good care of her, okay, Makishima-san?"

Makishima slings an arm around Onoda's shoulders, patting him once on the back before steering them both toward the club room door and the racks where their bikes are waiting. Onoda leans into his side, still grinning, and Makishima can't help but smile a little in return.

"I'll do my best," he says. "Since you went to all that trouble."
