“I’m done swimming. I quit.”

And in that moment, Haru’s world turned dark. His head, along with the room, started spinning, questions spiraling all around as Rin turned around and started jogging. Jogging away from Haru.

“Rin, wait-“ Haru called out, his arm reaching out in Rin’s direction, trying to stop him, to understand, to do anything.

But Rin was already gone.

And Haru stood there, completely frozen.

What…what on earth just happened?

Haru had known from the moment that he’d laid his eyes on Rin at the train-crossing that something had been up. While Haru had been happy to see him (he wouldn’t admit it out loud, but…he’d missed the energetic redhead’s constant presence), Rin had seemed…off. He hadn’t shown any excitement in seeing Haru for the first time in a year. He hadn’t mentioned anything about Australia. His smile had been strained.

The lack of light in his eyes worried Haru.

But Haru had decided that maybe the long flight had just worn-out Rin, or he was just having a bad day. Nothing too bad, nothing that couldn’t be fixed.

But a mere half-an-hour later, as Rin sat in front of him on the tiled floor with tears streaming down his face, clutching his goggles in his lap, Haru knew that he’d been wrong. So, so wrong.

It was supposed to be a friendly race, like always. Haru had stood at his starting block, a warm sensation coursing through his body as he glanced at Rin, who was adjusting his goggles on the starting block beside him. He felt unexpectedly excited.

I get to swim with Rin again.

And the whole time, Haru had been enjoying it. Enjoying the feeling of Rin’s energy in the water, of his heart speeding up as he made the turn. It had been fun.'

Until he’d seen Rin’s face as they got out of the water.

They’d stayed on opposite sides of the changing room, each one trying to shower and change faster than each other in the thick, awkward silence. Haru had kept glancing at Rin, still utterly confused and stunned. He wasn’t crying anymore, but his eyes were firmly glued to the ground, completely avoiding Haru’s gaze.

Rin had finished changing first. And, still avoiding Haru’s gaze, had stuffed his towel into his duffel bag and run out. Haru had slipped on his shirt and, not even bothering to put his towel in his bag, had started running after Rin.

“I quit.”

And now Haru stood alone, his arm shakily dropping back to his side as he looked in front of him to where Rin had just been standing.

And a sudden surge of guilt washed over him.

He’d…he’d made Rin cry. He wasn’t sure why, but he’d made Rin upset by beating him.

Rin is quitting swimming because of me.”

Haru’s hands clenched into fists. What had he done? What had suddenly happened?

And that’s when Haru decided:

If I made Rin stop swimming, then…then it’s only fair that I do to.

His fists clenched even tighter, making his nails dig into his palms. It’s not what he wanted, but…for Rin, that’s what he’d do.

(Ahaha, this is so rushed... :'D I hope it's okay, though! ^^)
