Hearts and Honeysuckle (470 words) (IwaOi)

He looked so serene there, lying in the bed of pale blue and periwinkle blossoms. They seemed to leech what little color was left in his skin, leaving it blanched and drawn. The fair hair that had been a source of pride to him now added only to his ghostly appearance, not his earthly beauty, and the silver crown glinted coldly amid the curls.

He wore such a serene, yet such a sad expression, the likes of which he may have worn at his lowest point. He looked chilled; forlorn; alone.

Iwaizumi couldn't bring himself to feel anything. His whole being was hollow-- that was all.

Clutched close to his own breast was a small bundle of orange and white sprigs. It felt as though his heartbeat could travel into and reverberate through the flowers, although he knew that was just an illusion. They smelled sweet-- sweet like Oikawa's satin hair.

He tried to draw a breath, but that beloved scent seemed to choke and strangle him. It was all he could do to take one step, then one more, forward.

"My... king." He couldn't bring himself to say the name-- that would make it too real.

Moving to lay the small bouquet down, Iwaizumi became vaguely aware of a tugging from deep within his chest. And, as he pushed the flowers farther from himself and toward the boy amid the bellflowers, he saw his own heartstrings tangled with the stalks. A heavy emptiness settled in his ribcage, accompanied by the sucking sensation of his heart being pulled from his body, amid his offering of honeysuckle, to lie against and bleed some living color across the chest of the boy in the coffin.

... ... ...

Iwaizumi woke with a small gasp, keenly aware of a single bead of sweat rolling across his forehead. He shifted his eyes over, momentarily afraid to move, checking that Oikawa was still asleep beside him.

The fair-haired, fair-skinned boy was smiling a childish smile, his pillow wrestled into an embrace as if it were a teddybear. It looked like was having a pleasant dream, and for a moment Iwaizumi decided not to wake him.

But, for all his emphasis on the good of the team when they were on the court, he was essentially selfish when it came to Oikawa. And so he kissed the other boy, and kissed him again sweetly until he stirred.

"Mm... Iwa-chan...?" he murmured sleepily, halfheartedly returning the kiss.

"Hey," was the reply, and Iwaizumi kissed him again. "You know... you're not alone, right...? Are you... okay...?"

"Yeah... yeah..." Oikawa replied drowsily, then released the pillow in favor of looping his arms around his boyfriend. "Love you, Iwa-chaaan..."

And Iwaizumi forced a smile-- a painful, genuine smile that barely kept him from crying. "I love you too. Please... don't forget that."
