The sound was soothing as Sousuke stood but he wasn’t at peace as he stood looking out towards the ocean. Yeah, he should’ve felt peace as he listened to only the sound of waves and gulls but instead his heart was hammering as he felt the sand between his toes. It wasn’t because of the ocean – no, he loved the ocean and the enormity of it. He liked that he felt small next to it, that he felt unimportant and all his successes and failures were nothing when measured against the infinite blue.
Instead it was because of who was stood next to Sousuke that made his heart beat out of his chest.
It was Haru. Haru who was gazing out at the waves, his eyes wide and his face neutral. It was a different ocean, a beautiful turquoise ocean and Sousuke could sense that Haru was itching to dive in and swim. Yet he hadn’t yet. He hadn’t because Sousuke had asked him not to.
Sousuke had asked him not to as he had something to say to Haru. And it was something very important otherwise he would’ve not stood in the way of his boyfriend and swimming in a body of water. He knew Haru well enough that it was dangerous thing to do.
Yet even though he was delaying Haru’s inevitable swim, Sousuke still felt the words were stuck in his throat and he was still stalling despite wanting to get this over with quickly. His hands were clenched in fists as he fought the desire to just tell Haru to swim and the knowledge that he had to finally ask the question.
“Just ask him, Sou,” Rin had said, “just blurt it out. Haru’s blunt.”
It was true. Haru was blunt. And that was why Sousuke worried. He was here, nervously trying to say something life-changing and he was sure Haru would brush it off with a quick comment. It made him stall. It made his heart beat too fast. And it made Haru impatient.
“Can I swim?” Haru asked.
The words broke Sousuke’s thoughts and he grunted and looked towards Haru. There he could see the love of the ocean, the love of the water and the love of swimming freely. And in those eyes Sousuke saw the dreams he had lost all glimmering in the deep blue. They were beautiful and they were what Sousuke always got to gaze into. He was lucky even if Haru could be irritating at times.
“Ugh… I just wanted to ask you something… will you move in with me when we get back home?”
Haru’s face turned from annoyed impatience into a brief smile and a nod. “Yeah, I’ll move in with you… now can I swim?”
Sousuke let out a short laugh in relief. “Sure… go ahead.”
And with that, Haru stripped in an amazing speed and ran towards the water. Sousuke watched for a moment, shaking his head until he too decided to strip and join Haru in the ocean.
