Bonus Round 2: Images

Bonus Round 2: Images

Back by popular demand, this round uses official canon artwork as fodder for speculation and extrapolation.
Please read the rules carefully before posting!

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on June 23 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

RULES
  • Submit prompts in the form of a canon screencap from one of our nominated fandoms along with a ship. Screencaps can be from the anime or manga, as well as any other kind of offshoot media, e.g. official art, drama CD covers, light novel illustrations, magazine covers, photos from stage plays, and/or caps from games.
    • Doujinshi, fan-made games or any other fan-created work should not be prompted, even if you receive permission. Only prompt official, canon artwork.
    • Keep your prompt concise. Don't prompt a whole manga chapter, for example.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Abe & Tajima). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Abe/Tajima). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
    • Upload the cap somewhere (imgur works well) and post here with the images themselves or a link to them. Including a text-only summary of the image is encouraged.
  • Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work inspired by the cap.
    • Fills can be directly connected to the cap, e.g. panel redraws or writing fic that fleshes out the moment that was capped or that fleshes out what happened directly before/after, but fills can also be more indirectly linked. As long as the work is somehow inspired by the cap, it counts.
    • Fills that are too long to fit in a single comment should have the rest of the fill placed as replies to the original fill comment. The subjects of these extra comments should be something like "part 2 of X" or "continued."
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

It was hot.

Practice was especially hard in the summer, when the heat and humidity weighed down everyone’s limbs and all the players were drowning in bucketfuls of sweat by the end of the day. Winter was also hell, the icy air burning one’s throat with each breath, but summer definitely took the cake. If someone played baseball or any competitive sport they generally got used to playing tournaments in scorching heat, but it took some longer to adjust than others.

Sawamura was witnessing this right now. In the short gap between lessons ending and practice starting, Furuya had decided to take a nap in the grass.

Of course, Sawamura wasn’t going to stand for this. Practice was going to start soon and Furuya would be in trouble if he was late; skipping was unacceptable, especially for those on the first string. He was likely tired from the previous day (or days), but Sawamura couldn't just let him sleep. Some gentle persuasion was in order.

He marched over to where he lay under the shade of a tree, standing over him. “Furuya, you can’t fall asleep! Your muscles will get all stiff!”

Furuya’s eyes were closed, but evidently Sawamura’s yelling had roused him slightly and he rolled over, an arm covering his face. Sawamura dropped down onto his knees and shook him. “Furuya. Hey, Furuya!”

A groan. “’M not sleeping.”

“Your eyes were closed!”

“No they weren’t.”

“They were! I swear they were!” Sawamura grabbed his arm, trying to pull him up off the ground. “Come on, get up.”

After a short spell of yelling (Sawamura) and grumbling (Furuya) it was clear Furuya wasn’t going to budge. Huffing, Sawamura let go of his arm and slumped down next to him, sitting on the grass with a thud. “Fine! But you can’t fall asleep. We should play a game.”

“A game.” Furuya sounded tired.

“Yeah! Like… cloud-spotting.”

Furuya looked at him, blinking, then looked up at the sky. “But there are no clouds.”

“Yes there are! There’s one.” Sawamura shifted closer to Furuya, pointing at a lone ball of white in the sky, shielding his eyes against the sun. “It’s small, but it looks kinda like… a mushroom?” He grabbed Furuya’s hand, lifting it in an attempt to direct him to the cloud. “And there are some more in the distance. That one looks like sunglasses! Or maybe a really weird dog. And-”

“What are you guys doing there?”

A shadow fell over Sawamura’s chest and he looked up to see Haruichi standing over them, looking concerned. His fringe had fallen away from his face as he looked down, showing bright, questioning eyes. “Practice is starting soon, you know.”

“We’re cloud-spotting!” Sawamura grinned at him, pointing at the sky. “Want to join?”

“Clouds?” Haruichi looked up, then frowned. “There are barely any, though.”

“There are a few!”

“Yeah, but... a few isn’t really enough to play cloud-spotting.” Haruichi looked back down at the two, then his gaze focused on something a little past Sawamura. “And I think Furuya-kun’s fallen asleep.”

An answering snore sounded from where Furuya lay. Sawamura shot up into a sitting position. “What? I told him not to!”

Sure enough, Furuya’s eyes had closed again, tension gone from the slope of his shoulders. His chest rose and fell in even breaths, but despite how relaxed he looked it was clear the heat was still getting to him. His hand was warm to touch. Sawamura wondered how he’d survive practice.

Haruichi knelt down next to the two of them, shaking Furuya’s shoulder gently. “Furuya-kun, wake up.”

No response.

“You shouldn’t fall asleep before practice.” Haruichi patted his hair, kissing his forehead. “Come on. Let’s get you a cold drink.”

“And ice,” Sawamura added, squeezing Furuya’s hand. He gave his stomach a poke.

Slowly, Furuya shifted, opening his eyes. He squinted against the sunlight, looking as if he was about to fall asleep again, but then seemed to find a few shreds of resolve and pulled himself into a sitting position, drawing his hand out of Sawamura’s to rub his eyes. Sawamura clapped.

He seemed to be reluctant to move any further, though. Furuya stayed seated, blinking sleepily as if he was going to fall back down any minute.

Haruichi made sure he didn’t do this by propping up his back with his palms. “Furuya-kun, we can’t carry you.”

“We could try,” Sawamura mused. “If I take his arms and you take his legs—”

“Eijun-kun, I don’t think-”

“I can walk,” Furuya interrupted, pushing himself onto his feet. Sawamura jumped. “He’s alive!”

A shout interrupted the three of them. “Hey! What are you three doing? Practice is about to start!”

The voice belonged to Kanemaru, who was standing a short way away with Toujou hovering a little further on. It seemed to have woken Furuya up a little more, for he sighed and stretched before finally deciding to leave the shade of the tree and reluctantly stepping into the sunlight.

“We’re coming!” Haruichi called, and he and Sawamura started towards the other two, a weary Furuya in tow.
