Bonus Round 2: Images

Bonus Round 2: Images

Back by popular demand, this round uses official canon artwork as fodder for speculation and extrapolation.
Please read the rules carefully before posting!

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on June 23 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

RULES
  • Submit prompts in the form of a canon screencap from one of our nominated fandoms along with a ship. Screencaps can be from the anime or manga, as well as any other kind of offshoot media, e.g. official art, drama CD covers, light novel illustrations, magazine covers, photos from stage plays, and/or caps from games.
    • Doujinshi, fan-made games or any other fan-created work should not be prompted, even if you receive permission. Only prompt official, canon artwork.
    • Keep your prompt concise. Don't prompt a whole manga chapter, for example.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Abe & Tajima). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Abe/Tajima). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
    • Upload the cap somewhere (imgur works well) and post here with the images themselves or a link to them. Including a text-only summary of the image is encouraged.
  • Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work inspired by the cap.
    • Fills can be directly connected to the cap, e.g. panel redraws or writing fic that fleshes out the moment that was capped or that fleshes out what happened directly before/after, but fills can also be more indirectly linked. As long as the work is somehow inspired by the cap, it counts.
    • Fills that are too long to fit in a single comment should have the rest of the fill placed as replies to the original fill comment. The subjects of these extra comments should be something like "part 2 of X" or "continued."
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

Posts not using this format will be understood to be unofficial discussion posts, regardless of what they contain. They, like all comments in this community, are subject to the code of conduct.

SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:

First 3 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 4-10: 10 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21+: 2 points each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only.

FILL: Team Grandstand, T

zombie au

Karate was more useful in a zombie apocalypse than Mai originally would have guessed (not that she had ever really thought about it,not when the much more realistic threat of Natsuo Ishido walked the school halls every day), but it was also not as useful as she would have liked. It was great for slowing the undead down and making sure you didn't get bitten, but as far as killing the damn things went, a weapon was best. A weapon, and someone to watch your back.

Mai couldn't imagine anyone better to watch her back than Sanae, or anyone whose back she'd rather watch. Even though Mai was worried about her parents and her teammates, wanted to know what happened to them, she couldn't quite squash the thought that if these were going to be her last days, she wanted to spend them with Sanae.

“Stop mooning about, Ganeko. You're supposed to be on watch duty, remember?”

Ah yes. Kanno-sensei was here too.

“I am paying attention,” Mai snapped. “There's nothing happening. No noise, no movement.” He snorted.

“Fine. Try and look a little more alert, then. Don't forget you're responsible for Sanae's life as well as mine.” He chuckled and went back to his sleeping bag while Mai fumed. Kanno-sensei had been helpful in helping Sanae and her get this far, but she really could have done without his constant insinuations and half-nasty remarks.

She was paying attention. It wasn't her fault if nothing was happening (it was a good thing nothing was happening; they needed the break) and the quiet night lent itself to thinking. She chanced a quick glance back at the camp, at Sanae's dark head poking out of her sleeping bag.

Mai was going to keep Sanae safe.

---

“I wonder if Natsuo is still alive,” Sanae said once, back at the beginning.

“I'm sure it would take more than this to kill her,” Mai had replied, more bitterly than she'd intended. Sanae snorted.

“You're right.”

They didn't talk much about whether the people they knew were still alive after that.

---

It happened on the way back from a supply run. It was bound to happen sometime.

A can slipped out of Kanno's grip and hit the ground with a clunk. Ordinarily, the noise might not have been significant, but they were hungry and hadn't checked as well as they should have. A zombie stumbled out of the back room and began groaning. Mai ran forward, pulling her knife out of her belt as she did, and slashed its throat before stabbing it in the eye. The three of them were quiet for a moment, hoping she had been quick enough.

A groan came from outside, and then another.

They weren't sure why some noises attracted zombies and some didn't, but for some reason every zombie in earshot would respond to another's groan, without fail. Mai, Sanae, and Kanno looked at each other, than bolted for the door. The zombies weren't fast, but they were near the door and the car was at the end of the street.

The three of them ran, Sanae taking up the rear, ready to push the other two forward if either of them showed signs of faltering.

Mai slammed into the side of the car, then yanked open the door and slid into the backseat. Kanno hurled himself into the front seat a second after. Sanae didn't follow.

“Where's Sanae?” Mai looked back down the street and stifled a scream. Sanae was picking herself off the ground, at least twenty feet away. A zombie was right behind her, with at least five more close behind. Mai whimpered and opened her door. Kanno's hand shot out and grabbed her arm.

“Stay in the car. Sanae's strong. Relax, she'll be fine.”

“The hell she will!” Mai spat. “What if she's dead, asshole?”

“Then she's dead, and there's nothing you can do.” Mai looked at him, momentarily stunned and disgusted, before yanking her arm out of his grip and leaping out of the car. She ran back towards Sanae, pulling her knife out of her belt and her hammer from its loop on her backpack. In front of her, Sanae threw a zombie over her hip and whirled around to confront the others. As she reached Sanae, Mai used her momentum to drive her hammer through a zombie's skull.

“Mai, you shouldn't have come back,” Sanae said, grabbing her own knife.

“I'm not leaving you, Sanae-san,” Mai promised, slashing at another zombie. “Either we both get to the car alive or we both die, but I'm not leaving you.” Sanae choked out a laugh as she stabbed a zombie in the face and kicked it in the chest.

They'd make it through, Mai thought. They would. One fight at a time. A weapon in each hand and watching each other's backs.

Oh man, these two! I love the world you built and how you incorporated the quote into the story! You write Mai's feisty attitude so well :))) And I love how you portrayed their relationship as them watching one another's backs :)

I didn't expect zombies out of such a prompt, but this still got to exactly what I wanted when I made it - the feeling of Ganeko refusing to give up on Sanae, and rejecting what Kanno had allowed for this long as the adult in their situation.

Ganeko is still biased and endangering herself, but there's always a feeling that if she doesn't let Sanae alone, then they could always have the chance to escape these situations. The setting allows for fun action, but the quiet asides in Ganeko's mind really make the entire tone of the piece what it is, to feel genuine and young and determined. And I really love that.

Thank you so so so much for filling this.

I'm really glad you liked it! All your Teppuu and Ballroom prompts are so good
