Bonus Round 3: Gift Tags

Bonus Round 3: Gift Tags

Feeling generous? In this round, you get to give creative gifts as prompts.

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on July 7 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

RULES
  • Submit prompts as a gift tag in the format below. You can specify the size and a characteristic of the gift, who the sender is, who the recipient is, and a one or two sentence note from the sender to the recipient. Descriptions of the package and the included note don’t have to be explicit, see below.
    • Package: medium sized cube, rattles
      From: Kageyama Tobio
      To: Hinata Shouyou
Note: These will help you get better.
    • Envelope: manila, 12''x17'', very thick and heavy
      From: Tezuka Kunimitsu
      To: Kinjou Shingo
Note: Enclosed - Play without regrets!
  • Your prompt MUST include a relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Riko & Momoi). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Riko/Momoi). Please don't say "Any pairing," either.
  • Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work. Fillers can get creative with how to interpret the prompt: your fill can be about the character receiving the gift, one or both characters using the gift, what prompted the sender to send the gift—the physical gift itself can even be excluded from your fill. What’s important is that the gift tag is clearly the inspiration for your fill.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

Suga arrives at the cemetery as it begins to rain. Of course it would rain now that he's here. It's a small, light rain. Almost more of a misting rather than a good old fashioned downpour. Nevertheless it's raining and Suga feels sick. He's wearing a light-weight windbreaker but his hands and face are exposed and the wetness makes him feel claustrophobic and nauseous.

The plastic bag in his hands is damp and clinging to his palm, the note attached is getting soggy. (no one will read it anyways) He closes his eyes, fighting back tears as he walks past all of the graves that don't matter, searching for the one that does. The one that shouldn't even be here. Why is it here? How? Too many questions and not enough answers.

Freak accident. That's what the doctors and nurses kept saying to him, to his teammates.

Never seen anything like it. That's all the Sawamura family had to cling to as they buried their son.

When he opens his eyes his vision is blurry and t's not because of the rain.

He doesn't need to look hard to find the Right One. It stands out among the sea of stark grey headstones that seem to protrude from the ground. It's adorned with layers of flowers all brought by teammates, classmates, friends and family.

Daichi had always said that graveyards looked like their own cities. Each headstone it's own skyscraper. Looking around now, Suga feels completely engulfed by this city for the dead.

Suga swears he won't re-live that day. Those moments that had seemed normal and commonplace for a high school volleyball match. He told himself he was here to make peace with the universe, to settle the grudge he'd been holding onto for the past year. This is his first time back, besides the funeral itself. He is going to let go.

This is what he tells himself.

What happens is he falls to his knees in front of his best friend's grave, hands balled into fists, plastic bag laying forgotten next to him. His forehead is pressed against the wet concrete and he's yelling and screaming, tears streaming down his face. Despite his intentions, his mind is racing back through time, transplanting him right back to the beginning of the end.

~*~*~*~

The game is intense but it's going well, Suga decides. They are in the lead and everyone has stepped up to make sure they get their rematch with Aoba Johsai, with Oikawa.

This rally has been going on for what seems like ages. Asahi spikes the ball only to have it returned by Wakunan's libero.

“Don't let your guard down!” We're definitely going to get this one!” Daichi yells out to the team as the ball comes over to Karasuno's side of the net again. Asahi, Tsukki and Kageyama all jump to block. The ball hits the wall of defenders and flies out of bounds where Daichi, reliable as ever, dives, keeping the ball up. Nishinoya is there too, hitting the ball next, putting it back onto Karasuno's side.

“Nice cover!” Suga shouts, smiling as the ball is back in play with Tanaka diving to hit it over to Wakunan. Then Suga sees it, sees him. Daichi is too focused, trying to make sure Karasuno gets the momentum from this rally. They're both watching the ball, Daichi not noticing Tanaka, Tanaka not noticing Daichi.

Tanaka's arm connects with the ball and Daichi's head connects with Tanaka's shoulder. The ball is up and over the net, falling down untouched for Karasuno to score the point. The crowd cheers and Suga is pumping his fist in celebration, but his eyes never leave Daichi's still form on the gym floor. He feels his stomach turn.

Time stops as everyone is watching and waiting, Tanaka and Asahi are trying to wake Daichi and it takes everything inside of Suga to stay right where he is and not run to Daichi's side. Ukai does run as Daichi stands on his own, holding the side of his face with his hand.

Suga exhales in relief as Daichi answers Takeda-sensei's questions. (Somehow he's missed Daichi spitting out his tooth. Something Kiyoko tells him after.) Daichi's giving Tanaka a hard pat on the shoulder, reassuring him it's alright and then he leaves with Ukai to the infirmary.

Suga gives Daichi (one last) smile and Daichi waves, holding a cold cloth to his face. Suga will never forget that image.

The game continues and Karasuno takes the set. Suga's mind is in two places at once. He wants more than anything to go sit with Daichi in the infirmary, but he knows he's needed more here, even if it is the sidelines. Suga has always known his role. He needs to be here for Ennoshita's sake, for the team's sake. Even for Daichi's sake. Daichi wouldn't want him holding his hand while the nurse clears him of a concussion.

So Suga stays (he still isn't sure if he regrets it or not) and cheers and puts all of his energy into the team and the game and tries not to think about why Ukai hasn't returned, why Daichi hasn't returned.

It's a hard fought game. Ennoshita fulfills his role as Daichi's stand-in and helps to secure the final point of the game. They've done it! They're moving on to the next round. Suga can't wait to tell Daichi.

That is the last thought he has before everything changes. After the game they are all shuffled into a small room by Ukai, who has finally returned (sans Daichi). He looks grim and the high of victory is immediately flushed away.

He explains that Daichi became unresponsive while in the infirmary and has been rushed to the local Sendai hospital for monitoring. Suga's in shock and hardly registers Kageyama asking when they can go see him. He doesn't hear Ukai's answer.

The rest becomes a blur, memories peppering the time from when they are in that cramped room to when they are in disbelief once more at the hospital.

“He passed away not long after he arrived. A freak accident. I'm so sorry” The doctor says, quickly leaving to who knows where. Suga crumples to the floor as someone falls to his side, Asahi, maybe. He sees Tanaka standing in the corner, a dark look on his face and Suga wishes he could comfort him, tell him that no one blames him.

He can't. He doesn't blame Tanaka, but he can't control his own shuddered breaths, let alone try to comfort someone else.

He sees Ukai, standing in the doorway, grief written plain as day on his face. He hears wailing (Hinata) over all the other crying and blubbering going on.

He shouldn't be here. He needs to be with Daichi, needs to see him one more time. Suga tries to stand but can't. He can't do much with this overwhelming pressure building in his chest. He hears his name but ignores it. He tries to stand once more and succeeds, numbly walking past Ukai out into the hallway. Takeda-sensei is there with tear stained cheeks. He says something but Suga can't hear him, waves him away with his hand.

He needs to find Daichi's room but falls to the floor the second he turns the corner. Daichi wouldn't want to be remembered lying lifeless in a hospital bed.

Suga wants to see him anyways.

~*~*~*~

Asahi offers to go with Suga to the cemetery on the one year anniversary. Suga smiles and thanks him but declines. He can do this alone. He has to. (it only occurs to him later that maybe Asahi asked just as much for his own sake as he did for Suga's)

He buys a bouquet of red roses and stuffs them into a plastic bag. He knows he can (should) do better than this but he woke up late and it looks like rain. He doesn't want to be in the cemetery when it's raining. The clerk offers him a complimentary blank card to attach to the bouquet. He begins to decline but decides to take it, hastily scrawling a message. Smiling sadly, he leaves and heads to the train station.

~*~*~*~

At the cemetery, in the rain, on the ground, Suga's tears stop. He feels calm but doesn't know how long it will last. He should leave while he can. Taking the roses out of the bag, he sets them gently onto Daichi's headstone, the note still attached.
