Bonus Round 4: Quotes

Bonus Round 4: Quotes

A shipping olympics favorite, this round uses quotes of all sorts to fuel your creative endeavors.

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on July 21 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." - M. Gandhi
    • The quote can come from anywhere. Famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, your neighbor, etc.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Makoto & Rin). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Makoto/Rin). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

It's a chilly afternoon, the gentle fall of the rain pattering against the window, and Bokuto has pulled all of their pillows and blankets out into the lounge room to build them a nest. He's waiting for Kuroo with two steaming mugs of tea and a smile.

Kuroo smiles back from where he stands in the doorway, toeing out of his shoes and walking over, climbing into the blanket nest and nuzzling against Bokuto.

"Your hair's damp," Bokuto murmurs with surprise as he nuzzles against it. "Did you get caught by the rain?"

"Little bit," Kuroo replies, burying his face into Bokuto's neck with a sigh, kissing the warm skin there. "How long did this take you to build?"

"Took a while," Bokuto replies. "Had to restart a few times because it wasn't turning out as well as I wanted it to. I like this one, though."

"It's cosy," Kuroo hums. Bokuto pulls one of their thickest blankets over them, wrapping it around both of them, and Kuroo's smile grows wider as he rests their foreheads together.

Loving Bokuto is easy. He doesn't ask for much; he just wants affection and Kuroo is more than willing to give that to him. Kuroo wants the best things in the world for Bokuto, wants him to be as happy as he possibly can, wants to do whatever he can to make that happen.

Most of the time, it happens just by indulging Bokuto's flights of fancy, by encouraging them, because Kuroo knows that no matter how ridiculous they might sound, they're going to end up being fun. Whether that's building a blanket fort for them in their lounge room, or going out to buy the most ridiculous matching clothes that they can possibly find, Kuroo is there, and he can tell just how happy Bokuto is to have him. That makes him happy, too.

"I scored some free tea samples from a shop the other day," Bokuto says, picking up their mugs and holding Kuroo's out for him. "Tell me what you think. Maybe we can go out and get some more."

It's a flavoured chai, and it's perfect for this kind of weather. Bokuto is thoughtful like that and Kuroo knows and appreciates it about him, even if Bokuto tries to hide it under his loud personality and terrible jokes. Then again, Kuroo appreciates that about him too; he doesn't think there's a single thing he doesn't like about Bokuto, and the thought makes his heart swell with fondness.

"Whoa," Bokuto says, when Kuroo pulls him into a deep kiss. "What's that for?"

Kuroo shrugs. "I like you."

Bokuto grins, bright and happy. "Yeah? I like you too."

“He's clearly a great athlete, but I mean, it must be so difficult to play with him.”

Kuroo gritted his teeth and turned the urge to scowl into a carefully crafted smirk accompanied by the eyebrow tilt that subtly suggests that you might be a complete moron and casually replied “Not really” like a champ instead of punching the jerk in the face like he really wants to.

Every time someone, a classmate, a player from another volleyball team or a different sport, the girl who works the morning shift at the coffee shop on Wednesdays, not so delicately implies that Bokuto must be a pain in the ass teammate/classmate/friend/whatever, Kuroo desperately wishes he had less self control. But the punching would definitely upset Bokuto and probably wouldn't reflect very well on Kuroo either.

The truth is that for him, everything about Bokuto is startlingly easy.

Kenma is his childhood friend and they've known each other forever and Kuroo knows he can tell Kenma anything and visa versa. Even then they still have to make those minor adjustments for each other, they are both pretty cerebral people and neither of them mind being thoughtful about their friendship but the first time Kuroo met Bokuto he couldn't believe making new friends could be that easy.

When they first started hanging out after their first summer training camp a million years ago in junior high Kuroo had actually been worried by how well they got along. There was the volleyball of course but they genuinely enjoyed each other's most stupid jokes, Kuroo never felt pressure to find cool things for them to do, Kuroo never had to be the cool one. Bokuto just liked him. Boundlessly and enthusiastically.

Intellectually Kuroo could see how Bokuto might seem like a lot for someone to handle. His energy, careless affection, and complete lack of any sort of indoor voice were overwhelming for some people. Combined with his low moods – when he was needy, or melancholy, or frustrated – Kuroo could potentially understand how people might write Bokuto off as too much work. But everyone who wasn't useless (in Kuroo's expert opinion) would stick around long enough to learn that Bokuto was the most supportive teammate – always excited for his teammates successes and constantly helping them improve, that he could be very engaged in learning if he was really interested in the subject material, and that if you were lucky enough to be someone he loved – that you would never doubt it for a second.

For them crossing the line from friendship to dating was as easy as breathing, just as easy as their friendship had been and a million times better. Kuroo had known since the first time he met Bokuto that all the other man really wanted was to be loved – it was that simple. Kuroo had always thought of himself as kind of a complicated person but it seems that when it comes to Bokuto that's all Kuroo wants too.

ahh, this is such a nice fill! i love how it contrasts kuroo's dynamic with bokuto to his dynamic with kenma, but in a way that still emphasises how effortless, how central they are to kuroo :")) thanks so much for this fill!

”I don’t know what to get him!”

Kenma sighs, softly enough that the sound isn’t picked up by the mouthpiece of his cell phone. “I’m not the one dating him,” he says, because apparently that’s his line in this conversation -- the same one they’ve have three times in the four days since Kuroo called in a panic Monday night because he realized he had no clue what to get his boyfriend for his birthday.

“Have you e-mailed Akaashi yet?” Kenma asks -- the next line in the script.

Kuroo makes a disgruntled noise into his phone and Kenma can easily picture him running a hand through his unruly hair, pacing around his little dorm room on socked feet.

”No. Asking for help is admitting defeat.”

“Then stop calling me.”

”Kenmaaaaa!”

Kenma sighs again, louder, this time, so Kuroo’s sure to hear it. “Get him something with an owl.”

”Yeah, but like, I got him that owl water bottle last week. And boxers a month ago. That’s not special enough. It’s our first birthday together! I have to set a precedent, here. It’s gotta be good.”

So anything volleyball-related is probably out too, then. Unless -- “Bribe Akaashi into coming to set for him,” Kenma suggests, as he wedges the phone against his shoulder and picks up his POP.

”Dude, no, I can’t get my boyfriend another guy for his birthday. That’s just wrong.” Kuroo sounds so genuinely affronted that Kenma finds himself smiling, and he has to readjust the phone against his cheek.

They sit in silence for a while -- comfortable, as always, even with the new distance of university and the faint air of frustration between them -- until Kuroo makes a disconsolate noise and says, ”I’m the worst boyfriend ever.”

Kenma just hums, and Kuroo squawks.

*

And that is how, come Saturday night, Kuroo still has yet to find a suitable gift. He resolves, instead, to treat Bokuto the The Most Awesome Birthday Date Ever, complete with ignoring their homework, extra volleyball practice, Korean barbeque, and a few energetic hours in Kuroo’s bed.

He still feels intensely guilty about the lack of an actual gift, despite Bokuto’s extemporizing on what a great birthday he’s had, and it finally bursts out of him when they’re taking a break and snuggling in a tangle of bedsheets.

“I’m sorry,” he blurts, and Bokuto shifts to blink at him with big eyes.

“For what? This is great.”

Kuroo gives into an impulse to kiss the underside of Bokuto’s jaw, and Bokuto practically purrs, tilting his head back and letting his eyes fall half-shut. “For not getting you a present.”

“What? Dude, no, don’t worry about it.”

But Kuroo does worry about it. “I just, nothing seemed special enough. And I love you, a lot, so I wanted to get -- Bo?” he interrupts himself, because Bokuto’s just made a sound like a squashed bird.

His voice is small but high and eager when he says, “Do you really?”

“Huh?”

“You know,” Bokuto waves an arm, narrowly avoiding slapping Kuroo’s chin. “Love me?”

“Oh.” Kuroo catches the flailing hand and squeezes it. “Yeah. Of course I do.”

He’s about to say something else, but then Bokuto rolls bodily on top of him and squashes their mouths together for a hard, wet kiss. He pulls back, just a bit, so their noses touch, and Kuroo feels the words against his lips and in his heart when Bokuto giddily says, “That’s all I wanted.”
