FILL: TEAM MIYUKI KAZUYA/MIYUKI KAZUYA, T

Fuji placed a cup of tea in front of Makishima, who gladly wrapped his long fingers around the hot mug, the warmth soothing him slightly. Fuji’s home always smelled sweet, the scent of dried petals and sticky honey permeating the air, and the tea smelled the same.
Fuji was fiddling idly with something on her workspace. It was always an orderly sort of disaster, covered with the trappings of her magical dealings. When she spoke, her voice was level and calculated. “Sohoku doesn’t stand a chance then.”
Makishima felt his stomach drop to the floor. He looked away. “It’s nothing as certain as that.”
Fuji didn’t look up at him, but she her smile was faltering. “You have Cassandra’s own luck. A seer without peer, but the gift is worthless if no one believes.”
“It’s not quite that,” Makishima said with a shrug.
“Your leader then,” Fuji said. “Kinjou. You’re sure he won’t survive the battle?”
Makishima felt hollowed out. Fuji was a powerful caster, her magic was without equal. But her tact left something to be desired. There were no wasted words with her.
“I didn’t say that,” Makishima whispered.
“But that’s what you saw,” Fuji said.
Fuji wasn’t a seer, not like Makishima was. She knew things, beyond what anyone should, but only of the present. Fuji saw what is while Makishima saw what could be.
“I guess,” Makishima said, hedging away from what he knew he’d seen.
“And Kinjou won’t believe him if you tell him.”
“It’s not that!” Makishima said quickly. “Kinjou believes what I tell him, but… Kinjou doesn’t believe his fate is ever truly written. He’s the sort of person that would fight fate…”
“To the bitter end,” Fuji said, finishing his sentence for him. “I know the type. And I feel I know a bit of your Kinjou as well, if only from what you’ve told me.”
Makishima looked away.
“And so what do you believe, Makishima? Do you have faith in what you’ve seen?”
“I…” Makishima paused, considering. He looked at his tea, but his stomach felt too unsettled to drink it. “I believe that every time I’ve seen something, it’s happened. No matter… no matter who tries to fight it.”
Fuji smiled, though it was hollow. “Then you only have two options.”
Makishima raised his eyebrows.
“Resign yourself to it…” Her smile widened at this point, stretched a bit too wide for what she was implying. “Or fight even harder.”
Makishima stared at her, wide-eyed.
She smiled. “Come on now, Makishima. You know as well as anyone that time is a river. It flows a course of its own design, but those that will it hard enough can divert it. You’re the best at predicting the river’s course, but even your predictions aren’t set in stone.” Her smile widened to show her teeth as she tilted her head at him. “It’s just a matter of how important it is to you, isn’t it? How important would you say this Kinjou is to you? Important enough to rewrite fate?”
Makishima’s breath caught in his throat.
Fuji pat his arm. “Drink the tea, it will help settle you. I’m not as skilled at potions as some of my colleagues, but sometimes that’s a blessing of it’s own. We can talk about fighting the future when you’re done.”
Makishima brought the mug shakily to his mouth, and at least took comfort in it’s sweetness.
