Bonus Round 5: Myth & Lore

Bonus Round 5: Myth & Lore

Summer's a time for swapping stories around the campfire. With that in mind, this round draws inspiration from the stories humanity have told each other over the centuries.

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on August 4 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

RULES
  • This round does not have prompts. Instead, we ask you to draw inspiration from the wide pool of mythology, fantasy, folklore, and fable. An urban fantasy or supernatural AU? A re-imagining of your favorite folk tale? Characters swapping ghost stories or playing D&D? As long as your fill in some way incorporates the fantastical and/or supernatural, it's welcome here.
  • Your fill still has to be about a ship from one of our nominated fandoms. What ships you create work for is up to you, though.
  • To submit your fill, simply leave it as a comment as a reply to this post.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

FILL: Team Kyoutani Kentarou/Yahaba Shigeru, G

Himuro Tatsuya/Kagami Taiga; Kuroko no Basuke
blood, supernatural themes; vampire Himuro (with bonus succubus Alex in the background)
word count: 1051

Tatsuya is thirteen when he's bitten by a vampire.

It happens one night when he's walking home from watching a game with Taiga and Alex. One moment he's laughing at a joke and the next, there's a monster on top of him, biting at him as he tries to push it away.

"Get away," Alex yells, her voice harsher and deeper than usual, and the monster on top of him is suddenly gone, thrown down the length of the quiet street.

Alex looks—different. Her skin is pink, there are horns protruding from her hair and she leaps at the monster, attacking it with claws and teeth.

"Tatsuya," Taiga says, his voice shaking as much as his hands. He touches Tatsuya's neck, his fingers coming back slick with blood. "Shit. Hold on."

He pulls his jacket off and is about to tear a strip off the bottom of his shirt to use as a bandage when Alex returns, clicking her tongue.

"Don't worry about that." She's back to looking the way she usually does, even though she has a streak of blood across her face. "Tatsuya, look at me. You're going to be okay."

He blinks at her, too afraid to speak, too afraid to do anything but breathe shallowly and hope he isn't going to die like this. He sees Alex's hands glow pink and then he stops feeling anything at all, as he passes out.

He wakes in Alex's apartment with a grim-faced Taiga sitting beside the bed, and learns two things.

The first is that Alex is a succubus. She's been protecting her boys from the local monster population for a while. She clearly blames herself for Tatsuya's attack, apologising every second sentence, and he doesn't even know what to say in reply.

The second thing he learns is that he's been attacked by a vampire. Because of Alex's interference and the vampire's weak power, the vampirism itself is going to come as a slow, but ultimately irreversible transformation.

"I'm going to become a vampire?" Tatsuya asks, trembling with fear. "Am I going to attack people, like the one who attacked me? I don't want it. I don't want to be a monster. I don't—"

"Tatsuya," Taiga says gently, holding onto his hand. "You won't be like that, okay? We'll just have to make sure that you're well fed. You'll be fine. You can drink from me."

"I'll teach you how to drink without turning him too," Alex says, resting her hand on Tatsuya's head. "You won't put him in any danger. We'll take care of you."

They have no way of predicting when Tatsuya will become more vampire than human, so he decides to enjoy his humanity while he can. He spends more time playing basketball in the sun, more time eating food while he still has the appetite for it.

He's fourteen when the sunlight starts to burn his skin. He can stay indoors during daytime without a problem, and artificial light is fine. He sticks to playing basketball in indoor courts, and avoids bright days.

His fangs grow in not long after and Taiga offers up his blood without hesitation, taking his necklace off to keep it out of the way and to keep it safe.

"Does it hurt?" Tatsuya asks after the first time, licking his lips clean, just barely resisting the urge to do the same to the drops of blood on Taiga's neck.

"It's fine," Taiga breathes. "If you want more…"

Tatsuya leans in, licking at the blood on Taiga's neck before biting him again.

Between the soft moan that Taiga lets out and the way they cling to each other, Tatsuya realises that they've crossed a line he's never intended to cross. He can't go back now, though. Not with Taiga's blood in his mouth. Not with Taiga's warm body spread out beneath his.

This isn't brotherly at all, he thinks hazily as he laps at Taiga's skin, then nuzzles against him.

"You okay?" Tatsuya asks, stroking his fingers through Taiga's hair.

"Yeah. You?"

"Absolutely fine," Tatsuya murmurs. He's sure that he will be, for as long as he has Taiga with him.

Which is, of course, when Tatsuya's mother announces that they'll be moving back to Japan.

When he says goodbye to Taiga for the last time, they hold onto each other tightly. Taiga takes his necklace off and pulls the collar of his shirt down.

"Drink as much as you need to, okay? Enough to tide you over until you can feed again. I don't mind how much. Alex is here to take care of me anyway."

Tatsuya does, knowing that now isn't the time to hold himself back. He bites Taiga, drinks deeply, and kisses him with blood red lips. He's pleased when Taiga kisses back, and even if he wishes he acted on this before, he knows it's a good memory to keep, because it's unlikely that they'll see each other again.

Except they do, a few years later, when they bump into each other by accident in Tokyo.

"Oh," Tatsuya breathes, his stomach dropping out in the realisation of just how deeply he drank as he takes in Taiga's paler skin, his crimson eyes, his fangs. "I did this to you."

"You did," Taiga relies. The chain that he still wears around his neck makes Tatsuya think that maybe Taiga doesn't resent him for it.

He should, Tatsuya thinks bitterly.

"Stay out of my territory," he says, instead of uttering apologies that won't change anything. "I don't want to see you here again."

There's a flicker of hurt in Taiga's eyes as Tatsuya turns away. It's the only thing that Tatsuya will ever bring to him anyway. The sooner he realises that, the better.

Except Taiga doesn't give up. It takes him half a year until Tatsuya will even give him the time of day. Tatsuya can't remember why it's taken him that long, when Taiga backs him up against a wall and kisses him hard.

"I'm here for you," Taiga murmurs against Tatsuya's lips. "Like I always was. Just like you were always there for me. That's the way things are, Tatsuya."

With a sigh, Tatsuya leans into Taiga's arms, and finds his home there. "It's good to see you again."

"Yeah," Taiga breathes. "You too."
