Bonus Round 5: Myth & Lore

Bonus Round 5: Myth & Lore

Summer's a time for swapping stories around the campfire. With that in mind, this round draws inspiration from the stories humanity have told each other over the centuries.

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on August 4 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

RULES
  • This round does not have prompts. Instead, we ask you to draw inspiration from the wide pool of mythology, fantasy, folklore, and fable. An urban fantasy or supernatural AU? A re-imagining of your favorite folk tale? Characters swapping ghost stories or playing D&D? As long as your fill in some way incorporates the fantastical and/or supernatural, it's welcome here.
  • Your fill still has to be about a ship from one of our nominated fandoms. What ships you create work for is up to you, though.
  • To submit your fill, simply leave it as a comment as a reply to this post.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

As time ticked by slowly, Kuramochi was starting to grow desperate. His tight grip on his sword was starting to hurt his palms as he dashed ahead of the group, ignoring Miyuki urging him to slow down. Kuramochi had always had sort of a one-track mind and, when it came to Ryousuke, he got even worse.

A few days ago, the sight of Ryousuke’s dungeon would have made him squirm. Kuramochi could never handle horror no matter how many scary movies he watched with Ryousuke. But, at least then, they would be sitting together with a thick blanket shared between them, the space between their shoulders so small that Kuramochi could basically feel Ryousuke’s presence, always oh-so tempted to reach over and curl their fingers together.

But now, Ryousuke felt farther from him than he had ever been and Kuramochi figured that was even an even worse feeling than trekking through this abyss of horror and creepiness and shadows that scaled the walls and floors. So Kuramochi could only focus on rescuing Ryousuke.

“Hey!”

Kuramochi flinched when he felt a hand on his shoulder. His grip on his sword tightened as he swung around and raised his sword.

Kuramochi froze when he saw Sawamura, eyes wide with shock and his hands raised in surrender as Kuramochi pointed his sword at him.

“Kuramochi-senpai,” Sawamura said, his voice gravely small and unusually wavering. “It’s just me.”

Kuramochi lowered his shaking arms slowly. “R-right,” he said. “So—“

Before Kuramochi could finish his apology, Miyuki appeared from behind Eijun, his face dark and his lips curled into a sneer. He stomped towards Kuramochi and grabbed him by the front of his shirt, shoving Kuramochi against the wall before he could object. A sharp pain shot up Kuramochi’s back and Kuramochi gasped for breath when Miyuki pressed his forearm against Kuramochi’s throat.

“Miyuki-senpai!” Sawamura called frantically, looking so worried that he might cry.

“Hey!” Kuramochi growled at him, his hands wrapped around Miyuki’s wrist. “What do you think you’re doing?”

“What am I doing?” Miyuki asked, snarling. “What the hell do you think you’re doing? You could have killed Sawamura, you hot-headed idiot!”

Had this been another scenario, Kuramochi would have probably kicked Miyuki’s ass for calling him an idiot and Miyuki would have laughed, but this was far from their usual light hearted exchanges. Kuramochi was already on edge as it was and Miyuki looked absolutely furious. His grip on Kuramochi was so tight that Kuramochi couldn’t pry his fingers off of his shirt. Miyuki’s eyes were practically glowing with rage, like he wanted to kill Kuramochi at that very moment.

“I get that you’re worried,” Miyuki said, his voice low, “but don’t take your shitty anger out on your teammates.”

“Let go of me,” Kuramochi growled, he shoved Miyuki away and glared at him. “I didn’t mean to do anything to Sawamura, but don’t you fucking talk to me like you know how I feel, jackass.”

Miyuki looked down at Kuramochi over his nose and made a small tch. “Unbelievable,” he muttered, shoving past Kuramochi.

Sawamura looked between the two of them, his brows furrowed in his concern.

Kuramochi rubbed the back of his neck, eyes roaming over Sawamura’s face and inspecting him for scratches. “Sorry,” he said softly. “I didn’t cut you or anything, did I?”

“Oh! Not at all,” Sawamura said, waving his hands. “You weren’t even that close! I’m fine, Kuramochi-senpai—it’s fine.”

Was it? Kuramochi thought to himself.

Sawamura scratched the back of his head, looking between Kuramochi and Miyuki as if he weren’t quite sure what to do. “I, um,” he stammered. “W-we should probably run after Miyuki-senpai.”

“Yeah,” Kuramochi said, lacking all previous fighting spirit. Now, his heart just felt heavy in his chest.

Sawamura looked worried, but ran off after Miyuki. Kuramochi walked along, rubbing the back of his neck, when he was suddenly aware of someone stepping next to him. He saw a wisp of pink hair and, for a moment, he hoped—

“Kuramochi-senpai,” Haruichi looked up at him, his expression as calm as ever. “Are you alright?”

“Oh,” Kuramochi startled. Of course it was Haruichi. Why would it be anyone else. “Y-yeah, I’m fine… Honestly, I’ll have to apologize to Miyuki later—it’s my fault for being an idiot.” Kuramochi looked ahead where he saw Miyuki standing there with his back turned away from Kuramochi and Sawamura holding onto Miyuki’s arm, waving for them to follow.

“Yeah,” Haruichi agreed. “You were being an idiot.”

Kuramochi let out a half-hearted laugh. “That’s harsh.”

“I understand though,” Haruichi continued. It was at that moment Kuramochi noticed how Haruichi’s knuckles were white with how tightly he gripped the bat. “We just have to remind ourselves that Aniki is strong.”

“Yeah,” Kuramochi said, “but like hell if we’re gonna let him fight by himself.”

--

Kuramochi’s eyes widened at the sight of Ryousuke sitting with his hands on the floor in the middle of the room, his form smaller than Kuramochi had ever seen in his life. His shoulders shook and his back moved like he was breathing heavily. His pink hair fell over his face and Kuramochi couldn’t make out his expression.

Warning bells went off in Kuramochi’s head. This had to be some sort of trap for Ryousuke to just be lying out there in an empty clearing. They haven’t seen his shadow yet and the air looked so quiet and still in there. A shiver ran down Kuramochi’s spine and for a moment, he almost didn’t enter the room.

But he’s right there, a voice in his head said and Kuramochi surged forward.
“Wait—Kuramochi!” Miyuki called after him, but Kuramochi just threw the doors open and ran in, ignoring the calls of his team behind him.

Ryousuke’s head jerked up and he looked surprised to see him, and then terrified.

“Ryo-san!” Kuramochi called out.

“Kuramochi, no!” Ryousuke called out, his voice cracking. “Get out of here!”

“I’m not leaving without you!”

Wait, Kuramochi! It’s a trap!” Chris’ voice called in his head.
Kuramochi stopped and turned around towards the door to see Miyuki running towards the room.

“You idiot! Get out of—“

Before Miyuki could finish his sentence, the grand wooden dungeon doors close with a resolute creak and Kuramochi and Ryousuke are left alone.
Kuramochi felt panic begin to build up, but it was nothing compared to the relief he felt, seeing Ryousuke alive. He turned back to Ryousuke and started walking over to him again. “Ryo-san—“

“No,” Ryousuke said, his voice shaking as he backed away. “Don’t come near me.”

Kuramochi’s face twisted in confusion and hurt. He felt like he was just slapped in the face. “Ryo-san, I’m just—“

“Kuramochi,” he basically spat. Kuramochi stopped in his tracks at the hostility in his voice when he saw Ryousuke’s face. Instead of anger, he saw something like panic—an expression he never thought he’d see on Ryousuke of all people. “Please just listen to me and get out of here!” Ryousuke said, hostility turning into desperation. “You’re going to get hurt and—“

Suddenly, Kuramochi felt a pair of arms snake around his waist and puff of cold air on his neck that made his hairs stand on end. Kuramochi froze as he felt a chin hook itself over his shoulder and he could see locks of wispy pink hair out of the corner of his eye. Ryousuke had gone still, words caught in his throat and his hands clenched into fists.

“—‘And’ what?” said the shadow, whose voice was so like Ryousuke’s yet simultaneously so distorted and strongly not-Ryousuke that Kuramochi could feel his heart beating in his chest and fear grip him tight. The hands slid slowly up Kuramochi’s chest and pulled him closer to the shadow behind him, fingers lightly curling into his shirt. “What could we possibly do to Kuramochi? I can think of a pretty nice, long list myself,” the shadow said with a purr that sent shivers down Kuramochi’s spine. “You know, what I’m talking about, don’t you?”

“No,” Ryousuke said, his teeth bared in a snarl.

“Of course you do,” the shadow chuckled and leaned his head against Kuramochi’s. “After all, Kominato Ryousuke, I’m you.”
