Bonus Round 1: AUs

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).
Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)
RULES
- Submit prompts by commenting to this post with an alternate universe idea, along with a ship from one of our nominated fandoms. There's a comment template below for your convenience.
- Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Izumi & Sakaeguchi). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Izumi/Sakaeguchi). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
- An AU can be a canon divergence, e.g. "what if [character] was the Team Captain instead of the canon captain character?", or a completely different setting altogether, e.g., pop idol AU, coffee shop AU, superheroes AU, etc.
- Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work.
- Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

FILL: TEAM PRINCE OF TENNIS, T

Word Count: 401 words
This hurt my heart to write.

The relapse came in the second year of Manami’s time at Hakone Academy. It wasn’t kind enough to wait until after the Inter-High was over, falling him like a cloud of locusts and stripping his flesh from his bones – or so it felt.
Later, his teammates would explain to Manami that he’d fainted during his last desperate sprint up the mountain to beat Onoda. They showed him a video clip of him pedaling strongly, then suddenly falling over the handlebars of the bike. Sheer momentum had kept the bike going for a few feet before it crashed onto its side on the concrete, taking Manami with it.
He’d scraped up the entire left side of his face. Onoda made jokes about how he looked like Zuko and brought the entire DVD set of Avatar: The Last Airbender to the hospital for them to watch. When that ran out, he started them on The Legend of Korra. Manami had never been interested in anime before but it was different when Onoda was there talking to him and turning a passive experience into a shared one.
Toudou fussed over Manami, alternating scolding him for not telling them that he hadn’t been feeling well with combing out his hair and trying to find a hairstyle that hid the scarring road rash. Being in college meant that Toudou could only visit on the weekends but he did so faithfully and his relentless chatter filled the hospital room with life.
Izumida gruffly told Manami that he’d done his best and nobody blamed him for losing the Inter-High race for them. Again.
The rest of his teammates came occasionally, their visits sporadic thanks to the harsh training schedule that Abs made them endure. Between practice and schoolwork, it was a miracle that anyone had time to visit him really.
And yet somehow, Onoda came every day, big blue eyes sparkling as he entered the room and smiled at Manami.
“What do you think dying is like?” Manami asked Onoda one day, waking up long after the episode was over and finding Onoda still there, peacefully working on homework while at his bedside.
“I don’t know,” Onoda said, putting his pencil down. There were teethmarks on the end of the pencil, a sight that made a surge of fondness go through Manami.
Quietly, slipping back into sleep, Manami said, “I think it’ll be like riding with you.”
Re: FILL: TEAM PRINCE OF TENNIS, T
thank u for writing and sharing this it's really well done <3
Re: FILL: TEAM PRINCE OF TENNIS, T
I'm actually having a lot of fun practicing writing short, dense drabbles so yeah, 401 words but SO MUCH.
Onoda is the best friend. He does his homework there, he watches anime there with Manami, he leaves behind burnt discs for Manami to watch if he's actually awake during the daytime when Manami isn't there...
The last line and Abs going "It's not your fault we lost again" are my favorite parts of this, honestly. I just. Love Manami so much.
He doesn't have to die alone here! He has Onoda! He's not lonely!
(He's ready to pedal into the Great Unknown! And Death comes to him as a small fat boy with glasses who takes his hand and says, "Come on, I have so much more to show you." And it doesn't hurt and the body he leaves behind is smiling still.)
Thank you so much for the nice comment, I really appreciate it!
Re: FILL: TEAM PRINCE OF TENNIS, T
s a m e i'm just Manami is SO STRANGE when did i love him so much i don't even remember this happening when did i get so attached to him
YES BUT WHAT WOULD THAT DO TO ONODA MY POOR SWEET CHILD he doesn't deserve to watch manami die
(pedal up the mountain of the great unknown and conquer it, watch from the peak while the small child with glasses tells him everything)
Re: FILL: TEAM PRINCE OF TENNIS, T
Oh no. I didn't think about what it would do to Onoda! I love Onoda but I am TERRIBLE at writing pure sweet characters (I just can't get into that mindset) so whenever I do Onoda ships, I write it from the other POV.
Pain seeking, fucked up Manami is perfect for me to write but it means I never considered what happens to ONODA when Manami dies!
...Manami leaves his bike to Onoda. Onoda rides it to victory in the next Inter-High.
Re: FILL: TEAM PRINCE OF TENNIS, T
HE'D PROBABLY cry a lot and then smile like with makichan's leaving the club and all that and soldier on bc thats what onoda does but he'll never forget manami and all manami was to him. (hi i just made myself sad akdjsklskfj)
im crying he would like, he gets to the peak and it'd be for both of them, not just him (let's make it to inhigh again, manami-kun. i want to ride with you again.)
Re: FILL: TEAM PRINCE OF TENNIS, T
Onoda's too sweet for anyone real to write. We'd pollute him.
OH MY GOD. THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT HE WOULD DO. Also stop using his own water bottle and use Manami's instead. He'll add stickers to it too, make it both his and Manami's.
And the mountain breeze pushes him along and it feels like Manami helping him, riding with him (and Manami said dying would be like riding with him but maybe living is like riding with Manami still).
