Bonus Round 1: AUs

AUs

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

This popular round is back once again! To begin this year's SASO, we encourage you to let your mind run wild with alternate ideas and settings.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with an alternate universe idea, along with a ship from one of our nominated fandoms. There's a comment template below for your convenience.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Izumi & Sakaeguchi). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Izumi/Sakaeguchi). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • An AU can be a canon divergence, e.g. "what if [character] was the Team Captain instead of the canon captain character?", or a completely different setting altogether, e.g., pop idol AU, coffee shop AU, superheroes AU, etc.
  • Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:
First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 5-10: 15 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21-50: 2 points each
Fills 51+: 1 point each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post).

***

It would be more characteristic to say he remembers exactly where he was when the news broke, that he had dropped whatever he was doing just to tune in to the announcement. That's the reaction that would befit the winner of the previous year's games, cold and calculating Miyuki Kazuya.

The truth must sound so disappointing.

Despite the danger a quarter quell posed, he wasn't to be found anywhere near a radio or a television set, or even anywhere gossip would travel fast enough to reach his ears before he was ready to hear it.

Instead, solitude and mile-long silences.

Instead, endlessly catching a ball in his mitt, listening to cowhide hitting leather and imagining someone else put it there.

Dusk has fallen when he returns to town, hoping to find himself in bed oblivious of Capitols, and presidents, and reapings.

If only he were so lucky.

-

He hates the way everyone looks at him, these days. Pity is abundant, as if they're all making certain he notices that they notice he's no longer the same as before. Fear is another culprit, evident in the eyes that linger only when he isn't meeting them, upon which they'd swiftly avert their gaze. As if to say they saw him, a year ago, on those big screens. Saw what he did, in all its gory and excruciating detail, to one of their own.

But the worst part, the part he can't stand?

It's that none of them lay blame. As if what he did was understandable, nothing more than a desperate attempt to survive. As if he had no hand in it when he'd spent days upon days scrubbing his palms under the sink, long after they'd stopped running red.

-

His name is drawn, because why wouldn't it be? Alongside him is someone whose name he only marginally cares to know; they may be on the same side now, but all that will change in the Arena.

The game should no longer be his to learn, but he's forced to play anyway.

Rei tells him of alliances and sponsors, of making himself appear useful, attractive as a fighter.

"I'm not really that forgettable, am I, Rei-chan?" He's wearing his carefree grin, as if daring her to bring up his sins. She meets his eyes head-on, one of the few people who's never backed down under the weight of his own.

"No," she says, steadily, the warning stark in her stare: your regrets won't keep you alive. "But it seems like you wish you are."

-

Rei dresses their team in lion's manes, with the head and mouth intact.

"Tell me this isn't real."

"Of course not," she says, pushing up her glasses with just a hint of mirth; a reminder that before all of this, she'd been a girl, like anyone else. "I'm not an animal."

In line for the procession, Miyuki sees one of the representatives in a crown and a billowing red cloak, chin held high like he owned the place, and wondered, vaguely, if there was room for two kings in so small a stage.

-

"Kazuya," says the boy who'd been pointed out to him as Narumiya Mei. The boy in the crown. Miyuki doesn't recall giving him permission to use his given name, but he seems undeterred. "Ally yourself with me. Your partner can come along too."

Miyuki regards him, blonde and blue-eyed and far too enthusiastic. No one else in the room has deadlier aim when giving throwing knives, but it's hard to see that in the wake of that cheerful, if cocky, smile.

"Consider us allied." It's the tactical answer. Rei would approve, even if she won't be too happy seeing him wear a similar smile, masking all the terrible things underneath. "Don't weigh me down, Narumiya."

"Woah, so uptight. Just call me Mei."

"All right, Mei," says Miyuki, letting it roll off his tongue. He holds up his buckler, making a come-hither motion with his free hand. "Try to hit me with your best shot."

-

They make it to the end, him and Mei. Just the two of them still standing across from each other, exactly like those dramatic scenes the vultures in the Capitol love. Former allies, tragic characters: Miyuki with his shield and sword, Mei with all his knives.

Mei grins at him, in pure expectation.

Miyuki thinks of the boy he had killed only a year ago—all hazel eyes and summer smiles—who had played catch with him growing up, thinks that the time he'd spent with Mei was shorter, less precious.

And if he grinned back at Mei in just the right light, he could fool everyone into thinking it to be true.

-

("Having me on your team is a strategical advantage, I knew that."

"No shit you're smart, Kazuya. But there's something else that crossed my mind."

"What else could there be, Mei?"

"That if we weren't in this mess, maybe we could've been friends.")
