Bonus Round 2: Tic-Tac-Toe

Tic-Tac-Toe

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Get three in a row! That's the goal of this bonus round. Inspired by a fanwork event type called kink bingo, this round encourages you to create and fill out themed prompt cards.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. There's a lot of text here, but if you read carefully and follow the instructions step by step, you will be okay.

RULES
Please refer to the first comment thread of this post for an example of how this round works.

PROMPTING

  1. Select a ship to create your prompt card about. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Haruki & Kazuma). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Haruki/Kazuma). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!

  2. Visit this card generator.
    • Here is a visual guide to using it.
    • The large text box is where you can list prompts if you have your own ideas. Please list at least 9 prompts; you can list more if you want. (The generator says you need at least 24, but it's lying.) Single words or short phrases are better than sentences.
    • Otherwise, you can use the dropdown menu found right below it. Note: some of these prompts lists are NSFW. (NSFW prompts are a-ok as long as you tag for it.) If you don't like some of the options that appear in a prompt list, you can delete them.
    • Text prompts only, please. Also, each card square must be unique—don't list the same prompt 9 times.
    • In "Configuration Options," make sure you select 3x3 and (Normal prompt). This is the most important step!
    • Leave the tic-tac-toe card with its default colors, so everyone can read it clearly.
    • Click the "Create a bingo card" button.
    • Scroll down to see the card that was created for you. If you don't like the prompts it picked, you can reroll by clicking "Create a bingo card" again.
    • When you're satisfied, scroll further down the page until you see a textarea box full of HTML.
  3. Copy and paste the HTML from the box and into the body of your prompt comment, then post!

FILLING

Fill prompts by selecting an individual square to create fanwork for, then leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work. (Optional:) If you can fill three squares from a prompt in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line, you get a tic-tac-toe (and an additional point bonus)! You can also just fill prompts as you please and get standard points.
  • Prompt squares are labeled as follows:
    A1 B1 C1
    A2 B2 C2
    A3 B3 C3
  • If you're trying for tic-tac-toe, you cannot combine squares into one fill. If your fill can satisfy multiple squares, pick the most relevant square: e.g., one square is sailing and another is pirates and you make a fill about pirates sailing, it's mostly pirates so put down the pirates square.
  • Each fill must stand alone as an individual piece, but all your fills can slot into a larger universe if you'd like.
  • You cannot fill a prompt square more than once, but you can fill every square on a tic tac toe card if you want to.
  • You cannot work with your teammates to get a tic-tac-toe. Only individually achieved tic-tac-toes get the bonus.
  • Multiple people can fill the same prompt square. You cannot "block" others from getting tic-tac-toe.
  • Remember to also follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points for each tic-tac-toe card (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:
First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 5-10: 15 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21-50: 2 points each
Fills 51+: 1 point each
Tic-tac-toe Bonus: 2 points each for the first 12 achieved by your team

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post).

***

The first time Ren grabbed his hand off the diamond, it was at the tail end of the fall.

It was colder than it really should have been, with biting wind that stung Takaya’s ears and nose. There had been the promise of warmer weather by the end of the day, so he hadn’t bothered to dress heavily and while it worked out well for him during practice, by the end of it he found himself chillier than before.

He blew into his hands, rubbing them together to at least get some semblance of feeling back in the tips of his fingers.

“Here,” Ren said, trying to push his own gloves into Takaya’s hands.

“No, you need them more. I’ll be fine.”

At first Ren looked disappointed, sliding the gloves back on. Then a look of frustration crossed his face and he reached out, awkwardly grabbing Takaya’s fist in his palm. Neither one of them really knew what to at that moment.

Somehow in a few seconds it finally clicks and they lace their fingers together.

“I...I have extra gl-gloves at home,” Ren tried, maybe hoping it would make things less awkward - in case Takaya didn’t really want what was blooming between them.

So Takaya just swallowed and nodded, “Yeah...thanks.”

They didn’t let go the whole way there and if Takaya had his way, they never would have.

The second time is a week later after practice. They were trailing behind the rest of the team, half listening to the various conversations winding between everyone.

Takaya almost missed it, the brush of skin against skin when Ren’s fingers grazed his. Their eyes only met when Ren tried to pull away for good, and somehow that was enough to convince him that it was okay.

It was nowhere near as awkward as the first time, because they had some idea of what they were doing. Their hands fit together perfectly and Takaya felt an embarrassing flutter in his chest.

If anybody noticed, they didn’t say. Takaya was 99 percent sure he saw Suyama snicker though and Tajima had off some money to Hanai.

After that, it just seemed to become more commonplace - on the way home from school, under the table during study sessions, and when Ren’s couldn’t seem to stop shaking. It was something small, and really not all that noticeable, but was theirs and theirs alone.

And there was nothing neither of them wanted more.

Normally, Takaya didn’t make it a habit to stay over the Mihashi household. Sure, he and Ren had been together for a long time, and they were probably going to live together once university started, but it didn’t seem like a good habit to pick up in high school so he only saved it for when it was totally necessary.

And after the day they had had...yeah, it was kind of a given.

By the time the sun rose the next morning, peeking through Ren’s window with enough gusto to wake Takaya up hours before he normally wanted to, the Walking Shitfest of a Day seemed like it had been ages ago.

A large part of him wanted to curl up and go back to sleep, safe in between the covers of a warm bed. But when he looked at Ren, and the heavy split on his wrist, Takaya felt a twist in his gut that told him there was no way that was happening.

So, he took the next logical step and untangled himself from the mess of limbs and sheets, climbing out of the bed. He picked his shirt off the floor and pulled it on, then his phone from the nightstand before carefully padding his way out of the room so Ren wouldn’t wake up. He scowled as he looked at the time, it was still pretty early, just a little after six, but he knew he would miss his opportunity if he didn’t act fast.

Takaya had never been much of a cook, even simple things would trip him up sometimes, but he knew he could at least try.

He pulled the recipe up on his phone and by sheer luck, the Mihashis seemed to have everything he needed. The bananas weren’t as ripened as the recipe suggested, but they would do and he promised himself he’d buy a new batch later to make up for it.

Combining the powdered products had been a low key mess, and he was sure he lost a good five minutes trying to clean it up. The whisk got caught a few times as he tried to mix together the brown sugar and (still somewhat cold) butter, and then again when he added the bananas and egg.

Around that same time, Ren’s mother came down to the kitchen as well. She yawned and smiled at him, “It works better if you soften the butter first, a lot of people melt it too.”

He ducked his head, “It was last minute. I’ll buy you new bananas later…”

“Please don’t worry about it, Takaya-kun. Let me know if you need anything.”

“Yes, thank you.”

She placed a mug next to him after he poured the mixture into the pan just a little bit later, “There’s more coffee if you need it, rice is still cooking too.”

He had a full hour to wait before the bread was done, which he hadn’t really factored in. He finished his coffee around the halfway point, and towards the end of the forty-five minute mark he made the genius decision to roll an omelette as well (which turned out just as spectacularly as imagined, especially since he had to take the pan out of the microwave halfways through that process).

Nothing about it was really perfect, the bread felt a little raw the middle when Takaya cut into it and the egg was not only a little bit charred, but had cooled in the waiting interval. A big part of him wanted to scrap the whole thing and toss it in the trash.

But he knew Ren would be awake sooner rather than later, if he hadn’t already noticed Takaya’s absence. All he could do was hope for the best.

When he managed to open the door while juggling the tray in his hand, he wasn’t surprised to see that his assumption was correct and Ren was already Takaya cleared his throat, already feeling his cheeks getting red, “Morning…”

“Morning…”

He walked over to the bed and put the tray down, “Um...sorry if it’s not any good. Your mom has rice downstairs if it sucks or whatever. There’s more eggs downstairs too.”

“W-what about you?”

“I had coffee. It’s fine.”

Obviously it wasn’t fine, if the look Ren gave him had anything to say about it. Still, he nodded and thanked Takaya for the food. He reached over for a piece of the bread with his right hand, before he remembered the split holding his wrist in place. He frowned, switching over to his left hand.

Takaya felt a tug in his chest, “Hey...it’s fine. It’ll be better before the summer starts.”

“I…”

“It will.”

“...okay…” Ren took a bite of the banana bread and his eyes widened, but if it was out of surprise or disgust wasn’t exactly clear.

“If it’s bad, you don’t have to—”

“N-no! I like it! It’s….it’s good.”

Takaya wasn’t exactly sure if he believed that, but he kept his mouth shut anyway.

“Takaya-kun...h-how am I going to eat the egg?”

All thoughts of banana bread completely left his head at those words. It only just hit him then that Ren wouldn’t be able to hold the chopsticks with his dominant hand, and it would probably would be a problem with his left too.

If his face felt warm before, it was definitely bright red when he picked up the chopsticks.
