Bonus Round 2: Tic-Tac-Toe

Tic-Tac-Toe

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Get three in a row! That's the goal of this bonus round. Inspired by a fanwork event type called kink bingo, this round encourages you to create and fill out themed prompt cards.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. There's a lot of text here, but if you read carefully and follow the instructions step by step, you will be okay.

RULES
Please refer to the first comment thread of this post for an example of how this round works.

PROMPTING

  1. Select a ship to create your prompt card about. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Haruki & Kazuma). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Haruki/Kazuma). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!

  2. Visit this card generator.
    • Here is a visual guide to using it.
    • The large text box is where you can list prompts if you have your own ideas. Please list at least 9 prompts; you can list more if you want. (The generator says you need at least 24, but it's lying.) Single words or short phrases are better than sentences.
    • Otherwise, you can use the dropdown menu found right below it. Note: some of these prompts lists are NSFW. (NSFW prompts are a-ok as long as you tag for it.) If you don't like some of the options that appear in a prompt list, you can delete them.
    • Text prompts only, please. Also, each card square must be unique—don't list the same prompt 9 times.
    • In "Configuration Options," make sure you select 3x3 and (Normal prompt). This is the most important step!
    • Leave the tic-tac-toe card with its default colors, so everyone can read it clearly.
    • Click the "Create a bingo card" button.
    • Scroll down to see the card that was created for you. If you don't like the prompts it picked, you can reroll by clicking "Create a bingo card" again.
    • When you're satisfied, scroll further down the page until you see a textarea box full of HTML.
  3. Copy and paste the HTML from the box and into the body of your prompt comment, then post!

FILLING

Fill prompts by selecting an individual square to create fanwork for, then leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work. (Optional:) If you can fill three squares from a prompt in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line, you get a tic-tac-toe (and an additional point bonus)! You can also just fill prompts as you please and get standard points.
  • Prompt squares are labeled as follows:
    A1 B1 C1
    A2 B2 C2
    A3 B3 C3
  • If you're trying for tic-tac-toe, you cannot combine squares into one fill. If your fill can satisfy multiple squares, pick the most relevant square: e.g., one square is sailing and another is pirates and you make a fill about pirates sailing, it's mostly pirates so put down the pirates square.
  • Each fill must stand alone as an individual piece, but all your fills can slot into a larger universe if you'd like.
  • You cannot fill a prompt square more than once, but you can fill every square on a tic tac toe card if you want to.
  • You cannot work with your teammates to get a tic-tac-toe. Only individually achieved tic-tac-toes get the bonus.
  • Multiple people can fill the same prompt square. You cannot "block" others from getting tic-tac-toe.
  • Remember to also follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points for each tic-tac-toe card (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:
First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 5-10: 15 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21-50: 2 points each
Fills 51+: 1 point each
Tic-tac-toe Bonus: 2 points each for the first 12 achieved by your team

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post).

Have a question? Check The FAQ first. If you still need help, feel free to contact the mods. Happy fanworking!

“Boy, this sucks,” Suga laughs ruefully, soft hair falling into his eyes as he digs through his backpack one more time for his missing keys. He can picture them perfectly on the low table of his shared dorm, exactly where he had left them this morning, but Suga has always been a man of hope, and he hopes that maybe he remembered this wrong.

Rain is falling down in sheets, silver and hazy and drenching the world into an unknowable blur all around them; but Suga’s laughter sounds like silver in the rain, too, and he’s pressed so close and warm, Daichi can’t say he minds the cold and the wet that much at all. Even if they are squeezed a little tight under the dangerously old metal awning that hangs over the front door of Suga’s dorm apartment, and Daichi can feel the back of his shirt humid and sticking uncomfortably to his skin as he tries to cover Suga as much as possible from the sudden spring downpour. There is still no telltale metal jingling of keys.

“Today is just not your day, is it,” Daichi says, voice rumbling in amusement as mischief tugs at the corner of his mouth. “You know, I’m going to forever treasure that look on your face from Psych this morning, when you plugged your laptop into the screen and everybody saw that photo of you last summer from when--”

“That was for charity,” Suga groans as he shakes his bag in frustration. His roommate was only going to be back in an hour, and they would be locked out until then. “Charity! A good cause! But I guess a monster like you would know nothing about that.”

“But you love this monster anyway.”

Daichi freezes, too slow to stop these easy words from tumbling out into the sheets of rain and the silver air and the leftover silver of Suga’s laugh; and the words hang there in the close space between them, like the echo of a small silver bell.

Suga freezes, too.

It’s their first year in university together, in this city so far from the green hills of their home, and for all the hours into the night they spend talking to each other, hearts overlapping in the soft evening, it’s not something that ever really comes up. It’s never had to be said, so easy and so difficult all at once.

“I,” Suga says. “Um,” Suga continues.

“Can’t let me win at anything today, can you,” Suga grins, poking at Daichi’s arm, jokingly, so achingly sincere, Suga’s soft laughter falling sweet and fresh like the rain in spring, and it’s everything in Daichi not to turn away blinded from the brightness that lights up Suga’s face, his smile, the press of his warm hand in his.

oh gosh oh gosh oh goSH i checked my email when i got off work and i literally had to sit down on a bench somewhere just to read this fill and now i just read it again and both times this left me smiling helplessly LOOK AT THESE DORKS LOOK HOW IN LOVE THEY ARE THEY'RE SO SWEET I LOVE

these lines: hearts overlapping in the soft evening and It’s never had to be said, so easy and so difficult all at once. like that entire paragraph basically, is just so. hnnng. and the way you described suga's laughter and just, suga in general, like yeah daichi, i get it, who wouldn't be in love with suga when you see him like that. the warmth between them even with the rain on daichi's back, the hopeless locked out situation and the accidental blurting of a little confession, the easy teasing between them.......

GOSH this was such a nice read, so refreshing and lovely, thank you for this wonderful fill!!

thank you so much for this kind comment, I'm so happy you liked the fill, I had a lot of fun writing it! I know I already yelled a bit about this, but I truly loved all your prompts for this card so much, they were so simple and yet so evocative, and I really tried to think around the ways they could say "I love you" without saying it outright.

(sorry for all the edit notifs you might have gotten, though, I got excited writing and posting and didn't read over as carefully as I should have....)

“I’m think drunk,” Daichi slurs.

“Yes, you certainly are,” Suga replies, rolling Daichi onto his side and placing a trash can by the bedside just in case. His parents were on vacation and had left him the house for the university summer break, but that was no reason to make an even bigger mess of things here. “Turns out Mr Big Buff Scary Captain Guy can’t hold his weight in beer pong. I hope you rightfully feel the shame of our loss tomorrow morning.”

“Just, just wanted to—”

“Have you seen Kuroo’s face? Have you seen it. You’ve seen it like a thousand times. You knew it was a trap, and you sprung it anyway.” Suga sets a glass of water onto the nightstand, and then places his own water bottle beside it for good measure. He can hear the last of the partygoers downstairs still yelling a count; he’s pretty sure they’re still trying to see how many times Kuroo can benchpress Kenma in one go.

“Why, not drunk too,” Daichi says, trying to gesture with his hands tangled in the sheets, his voice mumbling from somewhere low in his throat. He’s looking at Suga with bloodshot, watery eyes, and a little bit of drool dangles from the corner of his mouth. By all standards of handsomeness and decency, Daichi should not be that cute, and yet here Suga was, thinking about how the red flush on Daichi’s cheeks made him look so gentle and open, and he doesn’t even have the heart in him to be upset. Suga had also wanted to win that round of beer pong and he was doing so well, his alcohol tolerance and leftover setter accuracy blowing through the competition. But he’ll get over it. Probably by ribbing Daichi mercilessly the next day.

“I guess we just learned an important lesson today,” Suga grins. “And that is, I’m—”

“That’s you’re best,” Daichi pulls himself clumsily toward Suga, wrapping his arms around his waist. His nose is pushing into Suga’s belly, warm and soft. “The smartest, and prettiest, and the best, and the most special, and I love you the bests.”

Oh, Suga thinks, and Suga feels like crying, his heart feels so tight inside his chest and his hands are just carding through Daichi’s sweaty hair, and he feels like he absolutely just wants to cry at all of this. “This is not how I imagined our romance would go, Daichi. I thought there would at least be dinner first.”

“There’s still pizza downstairs,” Daichi mumbles sleepily, but he’s already slipping back onto the bed, and Suga just has to laugh helplessly instead. Morning will bring what morning brings.

i'm gonna yell at each one of your fills individually but!!!! "i'm think drunk" amuses me even after the third time reading this; drunk daichi is so soft and affectionate, i love how suga's scarily tolerant of alcohol, how endearing he finds daichi, the "there's still pizza downstairs" response has me giggling!!
(i'm just curious at how many times kuroo managed to benchpress kenma......)

“This is fine,” Daichi says. His voice is strained. Suga is not sure what will crumble first, Daichi’s once unshakable resolve in their condo or the thin ugly crack that has started to creep across their living room wall. It's going to reach the kitchen soon. Suga wonders briefly if he should start an office betting pool for it.

“This apartment was a miracle,” Suga says. “And I like to think it still is.” It's true, despite Daichi warily tracking the path of the crack once more — this little corner of the world that they could finally call their own, tucked away outside the city in the slope of the green mountains, so far from the green hills of where they came from.

But San Francisco is really fucking expensive. It’s Tokyo expensive, which they had managed well enough, navigating the city in their university years with the kind of frugal caution only country boys dropped face first into a neon-washed concrete landscape could, together. When they had moved stateside to chase after a career opportunity for Suga, they had learned the meaning of expensive in a very different kind of way, and they had to adapt all over again.

But they had made it theirs. In the white walls filled with candid photos of their excited first year in the Bay Area; in the terracotta plant pot on the low table that had travelled with them for so long, faded almost white with the years of varied sun, from the southern exposure of their shared dorm room, from the tiny east facing window with the thin wooden slats of their cramped Tokyo apartment. It’s still housing the same jewel green succulent they keep having to bring back from the brink of death, but Suga had never wanted to give up, and so Daichi had never wanted to give up, either.

The succulent is looking a little wilted right now, and something about the sad droop of its leaves and the forlorn droop of Daichi’s broad shoulders makes Suga laugh a little, rueful and light, because the entire weight of their lives could never be that heavy; it wasn’t work to carry this together. They’ve done it before and they can do it again.

Suga says as much, burrowing his face into the warm space at the base of Daichi’s neck. Daichi can’t help but snort a little, tickled by the feel of Suga’s breath so close against his skin. “So is Mr Hotshot Engineer gonna fix this.”

“I don’t know, Mr Hotshot Engineer Number 2, are you going to help me,” Suga teases back.

“Yeah,” Daichi says, voice so warm and achingly sincere in this moment that Suga looks up in surprise. There’s something stuck in Daichi’s mouth, something so big and important that he can hardly get it out, and all Suga can do stand there beside him, share in this space that is theirs.

“Yeah,” Daichi breathes again.

“Ground Control, can you hear me. This is Captain Sugawara in the RX-78NT-1. Please respond, Ground Control.”

Koushi has options. Not many, but just enough that it feels like maybe he has a chance at making it home.

Koushi closes his eyes for one long, slow moment.

When he opens them again, the star field is still there, achingly, desperately vast and unyielding and only a little bit blurred by the glass curve of his helmet and the prickle of tears at the corner of his eyes. He takes one deep breath of precious oxygen. He tries not to take any others, thumbs something in the cockpit, and listens to Bach streaming through his earpiece instead.

It’s not his first choice, probably not his second or third either. A student of his at the Academy had pressed the Goldberg Variations module into his hands, a small thanks for welcome advice, had muttered something about how Earth had once sent this music across the vastness of space as one of its greatest gifts, and when it was given to him by his shooting instructor, it had helped him — so maybe it can help Captain Sugawara, too. Out there. In space. Where Captain Sugawara was still so ungraceful in flight, the drag of gravity a hard thing to let go of even now. Koushi had smiled then, gently, wholly fond. He hadn’t expected this same student — wide-eyed, genius, trying so hard to be so good — to be the reason he was now out here stranded in the black in a spaceflight test gone completely wrong.

Koushi doesn’t believe in luck, but maybe luck was also something you could only know if you were born among the stars. What could he know of luck in a place like this. Condensation dots the inside of his helmet; the life-support system of his normal suit is flashing red.

“Ground Control, are you there. Ground Control, I think I left the oven on.” The music has moved into the fifth variation, rapid notes scattering like the stutter of Koushi’s breath. He’s starting to feel lightheaded.

“Ground Control, will you feed my cat for me. She’s so fussy, but you’ll learn to love her, too.” The ninth variation slows down into nostalgia, it’s so soft and Koushi aches, he aches so much for the ground beneath his feet, the earth of his home, the solid warmth of the welcome at the end of the day. But it’s so far. It’s so far, and there’s only the coldness of the stars to comfort him.

“Ground Control, I’m sorry I couldn’t make it. Ground Control, I hope you hear this, Ground Control, have I ever told you your ass is perfect and I—”

The star field shudders; something heavy and magnetic clamps down on top of him, and the frame of the cockpit starts to move.

“RX-78NT-1, lack of oxygen is making you sound a little funny, can you repeat that please.”

Koushi can see the carrier ship on the horizon. The eleventh variation is a thrill.

“Ground Control, you can check the logs, you ass.”

“RX-78NT-1, please watch your language in front of the children,” Ground Control says, and he sounds so relieved, the well of his emotions held in check only by the radio static. “I’m here to take you home. Hang in there.”

“I guess this is it,” Suga says. His body is tilted toward the window, face obscured. He’s holding his diploma with both hands. His black gakuran is buttoned right up to the neck.

The light in spring suits him. It falls on his ash hair like pale gold; it crowns him like a halo. Everything should feel like a new beginning, and it is, and yet here they were, standing in the familiar classroom they will leave behind for one last time, and the way the dust settles around them already feels like years have passed unknowingly. Will they be strangers at the end of the year. Will they even know each other at all after four years have passed.

“Do you know when you’ll be back?” Daichi asks. He wishes he could see something of Suga’s eyes, to tell him of something, anything, but all he can see is the corner of Suga’s mouth, turned up in a small smile. If Suga wants to hide something, it stays hid, but there are times Daichi can see the way Suga’s eyes tighten just a little bit, the way he clasps his hands slowly together, and Daichi knows just enough to know something. Anything.

“It’s a long flight, so maybe at the end of the school year. I’m staying with family in San Francisco though, so maybe not even then. I can’t waste this scholarship.” Suga’s voice is like spring air, but it carries a resolution that Daichi has learned to love above all things. He wishes he could say that out loud, just let the words fall from his mouth with all the weight of everything he feels behind them.

“Look at you, Mr Fancy,” Daichi teases, instead.

“I’ll take that over Mr Refreshing any day,” Suga laughs and this time it falls clear like a bell, and Daichi feels something like hope. Something. Anything.

“Hey,” Daichi tries.

“Hey,” Suga tries, too. “So I guess, I guess this is really going to be—”

Daichi doesn’t want this, he doesn’t want the crown of Suga’s hair in the spring to light these last words like they were the gifts he has to accept, complacent, he doesn’t want the long years to come into their space like this, not until he can call Suga home, not until he knows where he will stand in the spring next year, and the spring after that, and the spring for many more years to come.

Daichi has quick hands, but he still fumbles with the second button of his gakuran. “You’ll need this,” Daichi says roughly as he holds the button out in front of him. He doesn’t want to look away, he doesn’t want to look at all.

“And what will I do with an old button like this,” Suga teases, and Daichi has only enough courage to look up to accept his rejection when he sees Suga smiling, mouth soft, eyes soft, the light around them soft like the sun has never touched them before.

"Whatever you want,” Daichi says, and he means it. He has never meant anything more in his entire life.

“You’re missing a button now though,” Suga laughs, and he sets aside his diploma to pluck the second button from his jacket, too. “Have mine,” Suga says. “Have mine,” Suga says again, and he presses the small thing into Daichi’s warm hand, wraps Daichi’s fingers around it, and the sun is so warm in the spring, it's so warm, but Suga’s hands are warmer, still.

Kuroo’s laughter brays from the driver’s seat but Kenma beside him doesn’t wake up, or at least he continues to pretend he’s sleeping. It’s probably more or less the same.

“Listen, Sawamura Daichi-san, you’re not so hot yourself in the dating department.” Suga narrows his eyes. “And I can’t believe Kuroo would spill. So much for honour among thieves.”

“I resent that,” Kuroo says, eyeing them in the rearview mirror. He’s trying to look aggrieved but the natural slyness of his mouth just makes him look suspicious. “Get out of my car and walk back to Tokyo.”

“Did you just call yourself a thief, or did you call me a thief,” Daichi asks.

“Me. You. All of us,” Suga laughs. “Aren’t we all complicit in stealing away Kenma.”

They were on summer break from university in Tokyo, spending a weekend back home in Miyagi to take in some of the fresh green air the does something good and solid to the bones. Kuroo and Kenma had wanted to visit too (“Seeing Hinata is what passes for his daily recommended dose of Vitamin D,” Kuroo had said), and Kuroo had graciously offered to drive them all to and from the city.

“Hey,” Daichi says, as the landscape passes by in a blur of green hills and fields, everything painted by the orange sun setting behind them as they drive back to the city. It's a long way back, and they'll be long gone by the time true night falls, that time when you can still see every star in the sky; but maybe the neon pinprick lights of Tokyo weren’t such a bad stand-in after all. If Suga was being honest with himself, home didn’t quite feel like home anymore. Maybe it’s true that your bones could get too much of a good thing. Maybe it's true that you can even outgrow the ground where you blossomed in the spring, where you learned what it meant to feel like flying.

And maybe home could be this too, sitting the back of the car of the person who helped you land on both feet when you were all stumbling on concrete, watching with an ache in your chest as he puts the gentlest, most careful hand on a slumbering blonde head, maybe it was the way Daichi leans into you, to twine his fingers with yours, warm and close and the only thing you brought with you from home, Daichi and your bones, to plant in a new place, to grow a new thing.

“This is good, you know,” Suga says back, and he holds onto Daichi’s hand as tight as he can.

“You’re crazy,” Daichi yells.

“I can’t hear you saying how crazy I am,” Suga yells right back. “Over how loud your own crazy sounds right now.”

Suga knows better to look down. In fact, Suga knows best to look straight ahead, gloved, practiced hands gripping tight around the curved metal of the rollercoaster railing. His feet are planted securely in the tracks, and he knows that Daichi is doing the same just over his shoulder.

It feels like they’re a billion metres off the ground, it feels like even the easiest wind could leave them lightheaded, dangerous, but the pale morning sun is cresting the sky and everything is awash in gold, and Suga has always loved that feeling of being on top of the world; that feeling like flying.

Daichi and Suga have been exploring urban ruins for about five years now, ever since the thrill of it took hold of them in their first year of university, but this was surely a first. They were in Nara on vacation, here to breathe in the soft air of the green park, maybe see some deer, all very solid and normal travel plans for two people who needed a small break in their overwhelmingly busy lives. But when Suga had learned from a blog post that the Nara Dreamland amusement park — dreamy and fantastical and not quite right in the height of its day, eerie and surreal in the twilight of its ruin — was finally set to be demolished this year, his eyes had taken on that gleam, the one that says something about the mischief of crows, the one that has always led Daichi astray with it, afield, aflight.

“Higher, we can still go higher!” Suga yells behind him again, and if once he had followed close behind the stride of Daichi’s sure step, it was now Suga that led them deep into the thick of it all, Suga who was always so restless with the entirety of where he was, always so dissatisfied.

Daichi can’t help but smile at this, watching this Suga of this moment now steadily climbing into the dangerous loop of a rollercoaster flaking faded pink and teal paint onto their hands, and Suga is still laughing bright and open, urging them higher still. And Daichi follows. He’ll always follow.

“Wasn’t it worth it?” Suga says softly, an almost-whisper, as if the air here could break under anything louder. They’re sitting in the loop of the rollercoaster somewhere high above the world, and everywhere around them is blue and pale gold sky. Daichi pulls out the little Polaroid camera they carry as part of their documentation gear, and quickly snaps a photo of Suga under the arch of the rollercoaster tracks. Always. He takes another of Suga grinning at him, pale sun like gold in his hair. Always, always. He takes another of Suga turning to face away from the light wind, misses what Suga says softly in that moment.

“Always,” Daichi says out loud, and this time the wind carries the words home.

Suga finds the first one stuck onto the empty pillow beside him.

The sun is just cresting the horizon and their entire bedroom is awash with orange and gold, and it smells like the best kind of summer here, warm and fresh and new, but the space in the bed beside Suga is disappointingly empty, though he knew it would be. Daichi always had to rise before the sun for work. But today, today Suga finds a little post-it note, bright cheery orange, and it says in Daichi’s strong neat handwriting, “Remember the time we drove all the way to the ocean to see the sun rise.”

And Suga does remember, lies there in bed remembering the way the waves had washed against their bare feet as they had yelled at each other to go into the ice cold water, and then had yelled at each other again when they had both raced to see who would be first to be that brave. Daichi had kissed Suga by the water that day, shivering and blue-lipped, but all Suga had felt was how warm Daichi’s hands were, how they trembled as they held onto his waist. Daichi had tasted like sea salt in his mouth.

Suga finds the second post-it on the mirror in the bathroom, pale blue like periwinkle, and it says, “Remember the time we drove back to Tokyo and the sun was setting behind us and you cried so hard we had to pull over.”

And Suga closes his eyes, mutters something like, Daichi, I thought you had forgotten that, and sometimes he wishes Daichi would, too, how Suga had been so embarrassed afterward for feeling so alone and undone by the vastness of the entirety of their lives before them, and the moment he had to leave behind the bones of his small life, and only Daichi had known how it felt even a little, only Daichi had held his hand so hard it was his only anchor in the world as the sun set in his eyes, blinding him in red and orange and purple, until they had reached the neon tipped skyline of Tokyo again.

Suga finds the third post-it on their fridge, or rather, a series of them, taped together like Daichi hard started writing and couldn’t stop, and Daichi’s handwriting, usually so clean and strong, wavers a little on the words, and Suga can’t help but laugh at what it says, so helpless, so hopeless at this feeling.

“Remember the first time I said ‘I love you’ and you were so shocked you punched me right in the gut. We had to pull the car over a second time that day, but it was worth it. They were stringing coloured lights in the trees for the summer festival in that little park we used to live near in Tokyo, and you made me make a wish on every one. Suga, I wished for this. I wished that I could spend your next birthday with you, too, just like that day we had just spent, and I wished that I could spend the next one after that with you, too, and every birthday after.”

“Let’s go see the sun rise over the beach again.” Daichi’s writing ends with, and as the morning sun floods the kitchen where Suga stands, Suga closes his eyes and it’s like he can taste the sea salt in his mouth all over again, and he smiles at everything the day ahead has to offer.

thank u for all the fills, they're all so wonderful, it was interesting to see how many ways they can say "i love you" without actually saying "i love you" out loud, these were such a beautiful adventure :')
