Bonus Round 2: Tic-Tac-Toe

Tic-Tac-Toe

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Get three in a row! That's the goal of this bonus round. Inspired by a fanwork event type called kink bingo, this round encourages you to create and fill out themed prompt cards.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. There's a lot of text here, but if you read carefully and follow the instructions step by step, you will be okay.

RULES
Please refer to the first comment thread of this post for an example of how this round works.

PROMPTING

  1. Select a ship to create your prompt card about. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Haruki & Kazuma). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Haruki/Kazuma). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!

  2. Visit this card generator.
    • Here is a visual guide to using it.
    • The large text box is where you can list prompts if you have your own ideas. Please list at least 9 prompts; you can list more if you want. (The generator says you need at least 24, but it's lying.) Single words or short phrases are better than sentences.
    • Otherwise, you can use the dropdown menu found right below it. Note: some of these prompts lists are NSFW. (NSFW prompts are a-ok as long as you tag for it.) If you don't like some of the options that appear in a prompt list, you can delete them.
    • Text prompts only, please. Also, each card square must be unique—don't list the same prompt 9 times.
    • In "Configuration Options," make sure you select 3x3 and (Normal prompt). This is the most important step!
    • Leave the tic-tac-toe card with its default colors, so everyone can read it clearly.
    • Click the "Create a bingo card" button.
    • Scroll down to see the card that was created for you. If you don't like the prompts it picked, you can reroll by clicking "Create a bingo card" again.
    • When you're satisfied, scroll further down the page until you see a textarea box full of HTML.
  3. Copy and paste the HTML from the box and into the body of your prompt comment, then post!

FILLING

Fill prompts by selecting an individual square to create fanwork for, then leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work. (Optional:) If you can fill three squares from a prompt in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line, you get a tic-tac-toe (and an additional point bonus)! You can also just fill prompts as you please and get standard points.
  • Prompt squares are labeled as follows:
    A1 B1 C1
    A2 B2 C2
    A3 B3 C3
  • If you're trying for tic-tac-toe, you cannot combine squares into one fill. If your fill can satisfy multiple squares, pick the most relevant square: e.g., one square is sailing and another is pirates and you make a fill about pirates sailing, it's mostly pirates so put down the pirates square.
  • Each fill must stand alone as an individual piece, but all your fills can slot into a larger universe if you'd like.
  • You cannot fill a prompt square more than once, but you can fill every square on a tic tac toe card if you want to.
  • You cannot work with your teammates to get a tic-tac-toe. Only individually achieved tic-tac-toes get the bonus.
  • Multiple people can fill the same prompt square. You cannot "block" others from getting tic-tac-toe.
  • Remember to also follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points for each tic-tac-toe card (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:
First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 5-10: 15 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21-50: 2 points each
Fills 51+: 1 point each
Tic-tac-toe Bonus: 2 points each for the first 12 achieved by your team

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post).

***

You don’t remember the first time. Why would you? You’ve never been that kind of romantic. What you are is sentiment worn fine like grit between your teeth, a half-turned back and an air-kiss that tastes, faintly, of mint. He knows that too.

/

It never occurred to you to ask questions.

You were up so late last night, Tooru, who were you talking to?

Myself, you answer, honest. Taking a huge swig of milk straight from the carton in the fridge, you bid your mother good night with an airy wave and climb the stairs two steps at a time. You’re still sweaty and kind of gross, but you throw your bag down at the foot of your bed and flop down on it anyway, staring at the ceiling.

In your outstretched hand, your phone blinks with several notifications. One from the coach, with next week’s training schedule attached; another from Iwaizumi, threatening to kick your door in if you oversleep again next morning.

“Iwa-chan’s such a nag, huh?”

The voice that floats to your ears from the window is light, daring, laced with a fondness you’d only admit to yourself just like this, and you turn.

“How did you know it was Iwa-chan?”

His smile is the mirror of yours, except for the trail of milk bread crumbs on the corner of his mouth. He wipes them off with his thumb, licks it with relish, and says, “Of course I know.”

/

On your fifteenth birthday, he brings cake, half-eaten.

“You asshole,” you say, with an unbecoming pout as you grab the plate and shovel a forkful into your mouth, and he shoots you a smirk, joins you on the edge of your futon. It’s then that you noticed he isn’t wearing the blue and white jacket any more. He’s in your school uniform, shirt untucked and collar loose.

“Hey—” you start, and then you don’t know how to continue.

He tilts his head to meet your gaze. It’s like looking into a glass when the rainy season’s just starting. The drizzle has been coming and going all day, sweeping a humid grey through the dogwood trees, across the gutters.

“I got kicked off the team,” he says, matter-of-fact.

“What? That’s impossible,” you protest. “I’m still on the team, and—you’re—“

Me. You swallow, feel it go down tart in your throat, a strange flavour mingled with sweet blueberries and whipped cream.

He laces his fingers together and looks down into his cupped hands. When he speaks again, it isn’t a confession, not really. “Well, I punched Tobio-chan. I guess you didn’t.”

“I wanted to,” you admit. Your voice is thick, a barely intelligible mumble. “Iwa-chan stopped me.”

In the dead air that hangs between you, the glass cracks, splinters from the centre; like a bruise, it blossoms with a constant ache.

“Happy birthday, Tooru,” he says, inching closer, and rests his head on your shoulder.

Happy birthday.

The wish sounds hollow, even on the tip of your tongue. You settle for giving him the rest of the cake.

/

You have never been afraid of the dark. The shadows are safety, familiarity; you know where he lives in places you cannot reach by day, where the light retreats and there are ripples soft as secrets. He is capricious, as you're well aware, and you cannot always predict when he will come to you, but he comes and his touch is like a comforting surrender, and sometimes it burns, but you take his face in your hands and his breath is summer fading and his voice breaks beneath your lips.

“Can you turn back time?” he asks you, once, and only once, a ragged whisper against your ear. “Can you change the past?”

Can I be you?

Entwined, you feel his ankle hook round your own, his arms tremble.

“You have to live,” you say. “Because you’re amazing.”

You think you hear him half-laugh, half-hiccup a mouthy retort, like you’re so full of yourself, but the night is short and your time is running out, and so you kiss him again on the cheek, and breathe. Mint. Sweat. Milk bread and chocolate.

/

When you wake, the futon is warm and your sheets are rumpled. Your pillow’s still damp like someone’s been crying into it.

Maybe one day, you’ll see him again.

ooooh frick dude!!! this is so good, i've read the whole thing like, three times now. i honestly had no clue how people were going to take my prompt, but i'm super into the direction you went with it! this is so eerie and strange, but also really introspective? your imagery totally blows me away. that last sentence in the first paragraph is so visceral, and I also really like this line:

his touch is like a comforting surrender, and sometimes it burns, but you take his face in your hands and his breath is summer fading and his voice breaks beneath your lips.

anyway, i love this, and i'm super happy you chose to do this prompt! thank you so much for this fill!
