The empire of Souhoku was small, but its army was strong. It wasn't concerned with expanding beyond the territory it already controlled, but it held its borders with an iron fist. Not even the strongest, largest forces sent against it had ever managed to break through the walls that marked the borders of its lands.
The secret to their military prowess was the greatest general, Kinjou Shingo. He was normally found in the capitol, receiving reports from the borders and adjusting troops accordingly, but when a greater threat approached, he would head to the walls himself. No enemy had ever lasted longer than a few weeks after he arrived, and for that, he had earned the nickname of The Snake of the Stone Path, for his appearance on top of the great stone walls was likened to a snake rising to strike. To everyone who saw him, he was invincible and unshakable, a source of great encouragement and morale to his own troops, and of fear to their enemies.
He wished that he had the same confidence in his decisions that others had of him. There was no time for second-guessing and hesitation on the battlefield, but when the fighting was over, then he would reflect on the battles that had played out. Victory sounded like such a celebratory word, but to Kinjou, it came as a footnote to the damage reports and casualty lists and death notice he'd sign with his own hand before sending them out to be delivered. After every victory, he wondered how he could have done better. What different orders could he have given that would have lessened the cost?
Deep in the heart of the imperial palace lay a circular chamber, bare save for an altar in its center. It had once been the heart of worship for the palace, but over the years, the palace had been renovated many times, and the temples had built more comfortable altars for their adherents. The original room now lay empty and largely forgotten, and it was here, where he knew he would not be disturbed, that Kinjou came when his doubts grew to strong.
He had visited enough times that he knew the room like the back of his hand, and he no longer bothered to light a candle when he entered, finding his way through the darkness by memory alone. The cold from the stone floor seeped into his legs. He pushed it aside and tried to center himself with the meditation he had been taught.
It was a battle against the thoughts that warred inside his head. Sometimes, he would make headway and find the beginnings of the rhythm of emptiness, but then a new thought would appear from nowhere and knock him back out of the pattern. Other times, the doubts piled on top of statistics and reports until they threatened to overwhelm him, and it was all he could do to hold his ground and not let them sweep him away.
Sometimes the tide turned in his favor, but just as quickly, it would turn against him once more, not letting him make any real headway. It was in the middle of this struggle that a voice said "I know the doubts that plague you." It was a voice that spoke from everyone at once and yet nowhere at all. One that resonated from deep within him with the roar of a thousand waterfalls and yet echoed with the high whistle of the wind through the trees.
Kinjou opened his eyes to a room that now glowed with a greenish tinge. The source of the light sat on the altar, somehow graceful despite its ungainly limbs. No one remembered anymore who Makishima Yuusuke was. His origins had long been lost to the sands of time. According to some legends, he was the guardian spirit of the empire. Others said he was the very spirit of the palace itself. Still others said that he was one of the Old Gods from a time before the nation had even existed.
Kinjou didn't care. All that he cared about was that Makishima was here, drifting down from the altar to wrap around him, incorporeal enough that he flowed around Kinjou like a blanket, but solid enough to hold him securely as no one else had in years.
"I know the doubts that plague you," Makishima repeated, his voice now barely more than a whisper. "Set them free before they consume you."
Kinjou took one last halting breath before he opened his mind, letting the walls he had so carefully constructed crumble into Makishima's waiting embrace.
