Death, infidelity, neglectful parenting, marriages of convenience - Imayoshi has a lot to regret.
***
At the end of his life, Imayoshi numbers his regrets.
1) He hadn’t even tried to get to know his children. They’d grown in her and come from her body. He left the raising of them to her, compensating by funding the schooling and activities. There were excuses he could have given, of course, for his absence from their lives but the truth was that he had no interest in the little sacks of flesh that eventually became people.
2) He should have never decided that he needed to marry for the sake of his career. His wife had loved him as much as he had loved her and their children had grown up in a loveless house, loving neither of their parents for all that they did their filial duty. He should have married someone he loved.
3) He had kept seeing Hanamiya after the wedding. He should have made a clean break with him, should have said that it was over because even though his wife meant nothing to him, his honors and the vows he’d sworn still mattered.
4) He’d spent more time in Hanamiya’s arms than his wife’s. Wait. That wasn’t a regret. Hanamiya had been better in bed than her any day.
5) He hadn’t married Hanamiya. Heh. Not that it had even been legal back then. It would have been the end of his career, too. He would have never achieved the heights he had with a male spouse.
...And yet, nobody had ever been as well suited to him as Hanamiya was.
6) Breaking up with Hanamiya. His wife could have divorced him and it wouldn’t have hurt as much as that teenage parting of ways. Hanamiya had been dry-eyed and coldly contemptuous of Imayoshi but with that fierce anger burning underneath. In the fact of that, Imayoshi had felt that he couldn’t cry either - especially when he was the one asking for the split.
7) Not winning the Winter Cup. He had the Ace of the Generation of Miracles and he’d still lost! His middle school years had given him experience in managing an Uncrowned King and he’d thought that the Ace of the Generation of Miracles would be the same thing, only more. Aomine had been nothing like Hanamiya, though. Hanamiya made his own victories. Imayoshi should have pushed Aomine more instead of expecting him to come through when it counted the way Hanamiya did.
8) Meeting Hanamiya. If they had never met, he wouldn’t have all those other regrets.

Hanamiya is so fucking terrible and I'm glad that the 'little sacks of flesh' line made you pause because I was very pleased with it. I just had to sit down and think about how contemptuous he'd be of his family when they're nothing but window dressing, and how at the same time, he'd hate Hanamiya because he knows his life would've been better if it had been Hanamiya he'd chosen (but so much worse too).
Also fun fact! This was originally going to end with a 'regret' that made it clear Imayoshi was dying because HANAMIYA had killed him but then I couldn't think of anything Imayoshi would do that would make Hanamiya turn on him.
Re: FILL: TEAM PRINCE OF TENNIS, T
I admit when I read "couldn't think of anything Imayoshi would do that would make Hanamiya turn on him" my head immediately jumped to your other fill about crying and Hanamiya's mournful fury at realizing Imayoshi isn't the same as him, at that betrayal? But I'm glad to know that as frightening as this ship is, murder isn't
yet?in the cards ^^;Re: FILL: TEAM PRINCE OF TENNIS, T
...omg baby no, they were 16 and 15 in that scene HANAMIYA NO DON'T KILL YOUR BABY BOYFRIEND.
I actually think Imayoshi's more likely to kill Hanamiya than the other way around! Imayoshi's the schemer who'll cut Hanamiya free if he becomes a liability.
But honestly, neither of them would kill the other. Being a monster alone is lonely. And they do love each other, even if they'd never admit it.
