In war, all of Hanamiya’s talents blossomed. They called him the Spider Spy Master, said he wove his webs all over the world and tricked innocent officer workers into giving up vital information. He was in his element, safely ensconced in a bombproof bunker, giving orders and moving pieces on a chessboard that spanned the globe.
He never had to leave the heavily-guarded bunker. Food, baths, exercise, everything was provided for. The other military intelligence experts that worked with him even availed themselves of the ‘entertainment’ that had been provided for them so their base needs would not detract from their functioning or send them into the arms of a honey trap.
Hanamiya left them alone, claiming that he didn’t like sharing. He might’ve been able to call in a few favors and have someone assigned just for him but what was the point? The only person he wanted, the only one who had ever excited him on a level beyond physical, was out there fighting the enemy hand-to-hand.
Hanamiya moved the pieces on the map, the small steel figurines that depicted convoys and armies and tanks, and changed the course of the war while part of his mind was always plotting, always searching.
He had access to anything he wanted. He could find the last known location of General Imayoshi Shouichi - but that was it. He didn’t know if Shouchi was captured, wounded, making his way back to friendly territory, a defector… The options seemed endless but the only thing Hanamiya would not consider was that Imayoshi might be dead.
In war, the fate of one man did not matter. Imayoshi was worth no more than any other soldier of his rank. He had no sensitive information or special talents that would make the government agree to send a retrieval team hunting for him.
His only importance was to Hanamiya and Hanamiya’s ability to search for him was limited by how many little spiders he had out there, spinning the criss-crossing strands of the web ever more tightly together.
Sometimes, when he left the bunker and walked about in the forest with his head tilted back and his eyes fixed on the sky, he wondered if it would have been different if he’d enlisted with Imayoshi. At least if he’d been with Imayoshi in the field, he would have known what had happened to the only person he acknowledged as an equal.
But all he could do now was wait and will Imayoshi to return to him.
