Russian roulette, suicidal ideation, general fucked up Manami-ness.
***
"The closer you are to death, the more alive you feel," Manami said as he spun the revolver over the table. The smooth grain of the wod was as good as plastic, letting the revolver spin as if it would never stop. If it had been a bottle, the winner would get a kiss but as it was…
“I don’t think this is a good idea, Manami-kun,” Onoda said in a quiet, frightened voice. His blue eyes were very large, fixed on Manami instead of the gun, and his front teeth had sunk deeply into his lower lip. Under the table, his hands were trembling. He wrapped them over each other and held on as tightly as possible but that just made the quiver translate up his arms until his whole body was shaking.
“...Are you scared?” The faint note of disappointment in Manami’s voice was coupled with a thoughtful look as he took in Onoda’s pale face and the sweat that beaded at his brow and trickled down his round face. “You shouldn’t be scared of me. I’m not going to hurt you.”
At least, not unless Onoda wanted it which seemed very unlikely at the moment.
“I’m not scared of you.” Onoda reached over the table, carefully avoiding the still-spinning revolver. He closed his fat fingers over Manami’s, holding on tightly as if he could yank Manami back from the precipice of madness that Manami seemed to delight in dancing on. “I’m scared for you.”
“You shouldn’t be scared for me either,” Manami said tenderly, squeezing Onoda’s fingers. The spinning of the revolver was starting to slow. “I’ve been doing this for years and haven’t died yet. Three tries and that’s it with a 1 out of 6 chance for every try. That’s 5 chances to live- you see, it’s quite safe.”
But his eyes were glittering, hungry and bright, as he watched the revolver start to slow.
“If it was safe, you wouldn’t like it,” Onoda said. He swallowed, mouth suddenly dry as the revolver stopped. Its handle pointed at Manami’s hand so Manami picked it up with his free hand, keeping his other hand’s fingers still interlaced with Onoda’s. “Please, Manami-kun. Please don’t do this.”
Manami leaned in and kissed Onoda, soft and slow and achingly sweet. As always, Onoda’s eyes shut; he didn’t see Manami pick up the pistol and place it against the side of his own.
He didn’t see Manami pull the trigger.
