For all that Natsuo has been accused of arrogance, she's never been afraid to admit her flaws, her weaknesses, or her mistakes, if only to herself. And, she thinks wildly as she tears through the room, she has made a tremendous mistake, in thinking that these people, because they were like her, could not harm her. She has allowed herself to feel safe with them, to share their food and laugh at their jokes and be brought in to their lives, and, most infuriatingly, she has allowed herself to believe that because of all that, she was safe. She had forgotten that these people are predators, ones who delight in seeking out the worst of humanity and savoring it like the finest cuts of meat, though she herself did the same.
Worst of all, she had allowed herself to believe that there was only one way to harm her. Natsuo has left Kei before, when her kindness and quiet acceptance became too stifling, but she's always come back. Kei's hers; she's supposed to be safe. Natsuo is supposed to keep her safe, because that's what you do with the people who are yours.
If she has made a mistake, though, so have they, in going after Kei now, when Natsuo is strong and powerful after months of eating with them and training with them. Had they taken Kei's thoughts when she first met them, Natsuo would still have fought, but she wouldn't have stood a chance. Now, as she spits the last black thought she took from them to the floor, taste acrid and heady and nothing like Kei, she can hold her own. More than hold her own, if the two bodies on the floor are anything to go by.
Only two bodies on the floor. Kei has been placed on the bed, gently. Her chest still rises and falls, however faintly, but Natsuo can't see her thoughts, can't smell their comforting clean laundry-and-cup ramen smell. They've been taken from Kei. They're somewhere in this room, or this house. They have to be.
It wasn't anything personal. The words drift through her mind like smoke, a remnant of her eating so many of another's thoughts. We needed a dessert course. As if that makes it better.
Natsuo opens the top drawer of the dresser, and there's a rattle and clink of glass jars, thoughts that have yet to be labeled and sliced and presented on a platter. She twists the first one open and shoves her fingers inside, tastes the black thoughts. There's an impression of smugness, of bitter triumph, of fear at being supplanted, and Natsuo moves on to the next jar. She knows Kei is in here somewhere. She can hear her, resigned and affectionate.
Jar after jar, and Natsuo isn't sure how much of the fear and anger she feels is her own anymore, but she keeps moving. She crashes the dresser to the floor, smashing the rest of the jars and freeing their contents. She grabs a handful of writhing thoughts and crams it into her mouth, tongue searching for a taste of Kei, a taste of old friendship.
Natsuo thinks Kei would be shocked at the way she is acting now. She thinks Kei wouldn't really mind. She doesn't know what Kei would think, but she needs to, because she's never held back on telling Kei her opinions and Kei has always returned the favor. And it turns out that, just as Natsuo had never told Kei everything, Kei had quietly done the same.
Natsuo chews past eyebrows and broken ribs and too-bright eyes, searching for a glimpse of ordinary features and pigtails. She feels sick, almost drunk, and continues grimly on. She's run from Kei before, but she always comes back, and she lets that simple fact guide her.
She's made a mistake, a terrible one, and she's going to do whatever it takes to fix it.
