This is not exactly where I planned for this to do but it’s basically just travel and change and loss.
***
1) Every gram of weight is precious when you’re packing for air travel but Makishima packs nine of the Kumotaro keychains that Onoda gave him and attaches the tenth to his backpack.
A baby seated next to him cries on the plane and Makishima, prompted not by any especial love for children but by the desire to make it shut up, passes it the Kumotaro keychain. The baby immediately puts the toy into his mouth and starts chewing.
“Teething,” the frazzled mother explains wearily, bags under her eyes unable to hide her relief at a moment’s blessed respite. “Thank you.”
Makishima nods and turns up volume of his headset up.
2) His roommate is a proud, self-described ‘weeaboo otaku’ and admires the Kumotaro keychain so openly that Makishima gives it to him just to stop him singing the keychain’s praises.
3) He attaches one keychain to the handlebars of his bike but during the final climbing sprint of a race, tears it off and discards it along with his water bottle, his seat and his handlebars. He did learn something from that last Interhigh, after all.
4) He clicks his roomkey onto the keychain and then loses it. He has to pay the university ten pounds to be let back into his room and get a replacement key.
5) Toudou visits and demands that Makishima give him a Kumotaro keychain so they can match. Makishima did not expect it to be Toudou’s style but hands it over all the same.
6) During a blackjack game being played in math class to teach them about probability, Makishima wagers the keychain along with his favorite pen and every chip he has on the table. He spends the rest of the class trying unsuccessfully to win it back.
7) As a prank, a classmate borrows his keychain without asking and puts it on the seat of a female classmate. She screams when she sees it and hurls it through a window.
8) Winter comes and Makishima is not prepared. He leaves his backpack too close to the heater and one of Kumotaro’s legs melt.
9) A girl in one of his classes shyly asks if she can buy the keychain off him to use for an art installation. Apparently it’s exactly what she needs to convey the cannibalization of commercial concepts. He has no idea what she means but gives it to her for free in exchange for the promise she’ll e-mail Onodo a photo of the finished art piece.
10) Makishima clips it to his backpack for the flight back to Japan. When he gets home, he gives it to Onoda and asks for ten more.
