Warnings for injury, Tomoe being kind of a terrible brother but he redeems himself! He just really loves running!
***
The rain pelted down against Tomoe’s skin, a thousand points of impact deadened by his clothing and hair. Against his bare face, it felt like caresses, tiny fingers petting him and refreshing him. It stole the heat from his limbs, washing fatigue away from his well-worked muscles. Underneath, the mud clung to his shoes and let go with unhappy sucking sounds, squelching underfoot as he ran on. The air was ripe with the moist, heavy scent of rain and growing things, the city quiet for once except for the patter of raindrops.
He ran onwards, eyes fixed on the distant horizon, and didn’t pause. His long legs ate up the ground, carrying him further and further with every stride.
A scream sounded behind him and he didn’t hear it, racing to a finish line only he could see.
Five minutes later, his phone rang. He reached down to pull it out from its waterproofed inner jacket pocket, cupping his other hand over it to spare it from the rain. Huh. That was Riku’s number. Wasn’t Riku supposed to be running with him?
“Hello?” He asked, still continuing onwards. His voice didn’t sound in the least breathless. All the extra training was paying off.
“Nii-san – I fell and I think I broke my ankle. I can’t put any weight on it.” Riku’s voice, though small, held a note of pain that belied his attempt to sound count. “Can you come back for me?”
“…On my way.” Tomoe hung up, turned and broke into a sprint. His legs pumped quickly, the slippery mud underneath trying to trip him as he closed the gap between himself and his brother. RIku was on the ground, cheeks hot and red with either pain or shame. He cradled his ankle gingerly in his hands and when Tomoe came near, he looked up at Tomoe as if Tomoe were a hero.
“Sorry—“ He started to say but Tomoe interrupted him, kneeling in the mud to take Riku’s ankle and look at it for himself.
“You shouldn’t have come with me,” he said briefly, verifying for himself that it was indeed a sprain and not a break. “You can’t handle wet runs yet.”
He scooped Riku up in his arms, cradling his younger brother against his chest as he walked slowly back home. “It’s just a sprain – I’ll carry you back home and we’ll get it bandaged. Stay off it for a while and it’ll heal fine.”
Riku blocked the rain from hitting his chest. That must be why Tomoe suddenly felt so warm.
