Bonus Round 4: Quotes

Quotes

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

An oldie but a goodie—in this round, we draw inspiration from famous words said by other people.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." -Friedrich Nietzsche
    • The quote can come from almost anything—famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, etc.— but please don't quote personal conversations you've had or overheard.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

Miyuki is a romantic.

Well, okay, yes that’s a lie. Miyuki’s not really a romantic, but he does believe in love. He might not believe he’s capable of it, or that he deserves it, but he does believe in love. It’s in the way his father still buys cosmos for the dining table when they’re in season, because his mother used to love them, the way pictures of her are still scattered around the house. He believes in a kind of love that is enduring, that is more than the fabricated stories of Sawamura’s shoujo mangas and hackneyed movie plots, mostly because he’s seen it firsthand.

Of course, he doesn’t believe it will ever happen to him, but that’s a different story altogether. He’s happy enough to go day to day without thinking of these things, of love and what it means. He has an apartment that he shares with Nabe and a job he likes well enough, he has baseball and Kuramochi to keep him company when he goes drinking, his relationship with his father is never going to be the greatest, but it's improving and they’re both learning things about each other. He’s quite happy where he is right now in life, and he doesn’t need love in the equation.

Nabe texts him a reminder to pick up more milk and also please get those chips you know the ones and also Pocky because movie tonight and he sighs, but he drops by the supermarket and gets a few other things for dinner.

He’s making karaage when Nabe stumbles past and flops on the couch, mumbling tadaima into the cushions while Miyuki rolls his eyes. “Your chips are in the cupboard.” he tells a prone Nabe.

There’s barely any acknowledgement beyond a slight twitch, and Miyuki goes back to cooking, repeating familiar motions. Nabe eventually peels himself off the couch and helps set the table, the news playing in the background while they have dinner.

“What are we watching tonight?” he asks, leaning back in his chair and setting his chopsticks down. Miyuki shrugs as he stacks the empty dishes.

“Isn’t it your pick this round?”

“Oh. Right.” He considers it a moment. “Spirited Away?”

“Again?”

“Well, that or Summer Wars. My brain’s fried tonight.” Nabe slumps on the table as if to emphasize his point, peeking up to offer Miyuki a pathetic look.

“If you do the dishes.” Miyuki concedes, sighing. He’d much rather watch Tokyo Godfathers if they were watching animated films, but at least Nabe had better taste than Sawamura. The last time he’d been dragged to a movie with Sawamura, there had been tears and heartfelt confessions and a plot straight out of a shoujo manga.

He sets it up while Nabe cleans up the remnants of their dinner, then joins him on the couch with snacks and drinks. The movie starts and Miyuki lets himself be absorbed in a story he’s seen before, about monsters and girls who dared to defy the odds. They pass the chips back and forth, legs tangled on the couch and comfortable.

Miyuki doesn't know when it had become so easy to be around Nabe, to let their personal spaces overlap. He’s never been big on sharing, but Nabe is easy to get along with and he leaves Miyuki to his own devices for the most part. He’s very much a part of Miyuki’s life now, fitting neatly in between baseball matches and his penchant for terrible pranks. It’s always a toss up if Nabe will help him or sabotage him, but the pranks are usually much better when Nabe helps.

Miyuki's not sure what he’d do if Nabe ever decides to get his own apartment, or if he moved out of here. He’ll get by, because he’s Miyuki Kazuya and he’s capable of being alone. He’s done it before and he’ll do it again. But he thinks he’ll miss having someone to come home to, and to watch shitty movies and talk about baseball with, or just the comfort of having someone around.

He doesn’t notice the movie is over til Nabe lets out a yawn, stretching his legs while the credits roll, until it fades to black and there’s the soft hum of their shitty TV running but not showing anything.

“I’ll get it.” he sighs, when Nabe just continues to lie there, staring at the blank screen. Nabe’s grateful smile makes something in Miyuki’s stomach clench, and he wonders if it was dinner or if it’s something else he doesn't have a name for. So he stands up and goes to turn off the TV when Nabe sits up, staring at him.

“Would you believe me if I told I you I loved you?”

There’s not much that can stop Miyuki in his tracks, but that does it and he turns around to face Nabe. “Are you so tired you’re hallucinating?” he asks slowly.

“Possibly, but that doesn’t mean I’m not serious about this.” Nabe looks entirely serious, even if he is tired.

“Oh.”

“It doesn’t have to be anything.” Nabe shrugs. “I just wanted to tell you.” he says, matter of fact.

Miyuki’s a lot of things. He’s mischievous, he’s got a terrible personality, he takes too much joy in laughing at other people. He’s also bad at recognizing love it seems, because he’s standing in his shitty apartment staring at his roommate slash friend slash high school teammate and thinking about the ways love can manifest in the small things, from making meals to curling up on the couch to watch a movie for the tenth time to picking up small things the other person wants for no other reason than because they want it.

“I think, maybe I love you too.” he says slowly, the words foreign and uncomfortable on his tongue. Nabe stares at him for a long moment, before he scrubs at his face and groans into his hands.

“Okay, I’m definitely hallucinating because Miyuki Kazuya would never say that.” He slumps onto the couch face first, and Miyuki’s suddenly next to him, nudging him into sitting and letting Nabe lean against him, an arm around his shoulders while Nabe mumbles into his shoulder.

“I mean it, you know.” Miyuki tells him later, when Nabe’s stopped mumbling and he’s just leaning against Miyuki, a familiar weight against his shoulder. He reaches out for Nabe’s hand and curls his fingers around Nabe’s, squeezing gently. He gets a soft squeeze back, hesitant and hopeful as they sit there, listening to the hum of electricity from the TV.

He wonders why now, why him, but the knowledge sits in his chest, comforting and fragile, something waiting to happen, a promise waiting to be fulfilled. It’s love waiting to happen, unfurling quietly in small moments and simple gestures, patient and careful and everything Miyuki’s never dared to hope for.
