For all that Kenma's eyes are usually hidden behind his bangs or behind the screen of one of his games, Kuroo would still describe them as "piercing." They don't bore into him the way many people mean when they use the word, but Kuroo feels it's applicable nonetheless. Kenma doesn't need to stare to work his magic, even a passing glance is enough for that brain of his.
Kuroo knows how Kenma's brain works, or at least roughly what makes it tick, even if he's long since given up on understanding what goes on inside Kenma's mind. All he knows is that one passing glance from Kenma is more than equal to a long stare from anyone else. It's as if Kenma takes a mental snapshot in that moment, and then retreats into himself to analyze it fully on his own time. It's almost overwhelming sometimes just how much Kenma pulls out of such a quick look.
At least, that what Kuroo thought before the first time he catches Kenma staring at him openly. It's just the two of them showering and changing after a casual practice together one day, and when Kuroo turns around to grab a clean shirt from his bag, he finds Kenma sitting on the bench next to him and staring.
Kuroo freezes. Kenma's cheeks turn pink, but he doesn't look away. "Is this okay?" he asks quietly.
Kuroo nods. "Yes," he says, the word catching unexpectedly in his throat.
There's something both terrifying and thrilling about the way Kenma's gaze slowly works it's way up his body from his ankles to the towel around his hips to his shoulders. He can almost hear the mental shutter snap as Kenma files away image after image for future study. Kuroo's heart pounds in his chest, caught in the knowledge that, in this moment, Kenma is even more aware of his body than he himself is. The intimacy of the moment presses in on him so heavily he finds it difficult to breathe.
Kenma's eyes continue their slow path upward until they finally meet his. The eye contact only lasts for a split second before Kenma breaks it, his eyes falling back to the game in his hands, but in that instant, Kuroo has the distinct impression that it's not just his body that Kenma has taken in. It's the feeling that Kenma has seen everything that lies under his skin as well, every hope, dream, and fear of his laid out for Kenma to see.
Kuroo's hands are shaking for reasons he can't explain as he finishes changing. Kenma pulls him down onto the bench next to him, settling into his usual spot curled up against Kuroo's side he fights whatever boss he's trying to beat in his game.
"Love you," Kenma says quietly.
Kuroo runs a hand through Kenma's hair, letting the familiar scent of Kenma's shampoo, and the familiar warmth of Kenma at his side ground him until he feels less shaky.
"I love you too."
Re: FILL: Team Imaizumi Shunsuke/Kinjou Shingo, T
kuroken will always be my first and truest love and i hadn't known how terribly i missed them til i read this fill just now. the care in how you described kenma through kuroo's eyes, how enigmatic he is and how okay that is, and how bold kenma is in the quiet they share, and how easily kenma undoes kuroo without uttering a single word. i am SO weak for this dynamic and this stolen moment of intimacy. SO WEAK!!!!
i love the words you chose and how you put them together too and the "i love you"s at the end i'm so!!!!!! i'm going to be yelling about this all day thank you so so much for this i love it so much
