At first, Tomoe was certain he knew what he wanted. It was impossible to describe the way he felt on a Stride course as the adrenaline rushed through his veins and the wind rushed through his hair. Sometimes he felt like even his teammates didn't understand the feeling, the moment when ever their Relationer's voice faded into little more than a crackle in his ear that blended in as just another piece of everything he took in around him.
He felt alive on the course in a way he never did anywhere else, and it was the search for that feeling that drew him away from his team and out of Japan to the US to train. Stride sung in his veins, and its pull was so strong that he didn't think much of it when he left everyone, including his brother, behind.
It wasn't until he had been training in America for several months that he started to feel the uneasy tug of something drawing him away. It distracted him from his training though, so he tried to push it away, but it came back stronger every time. It wasn't until he couldn't ignore it any longer that he finally took the time to try to identify it, and when he did, he suddenly realized the mistake he had made.
It wasn't Stride that had been calling to him for so long. It was the bonds he had formed through the sport. It wasn't running that made his blood sign and his heart soar. It was knowing that he was part of a team, and that he had teammates who cared about him and would push him to forever strive for improvement just as he pushed them.
The realization shook him, and it was with a heavy heart that he returned to Japan. He didn't know how to apologize for the mistake that he had made. He hadn't realized before just how much his departure had hurt those around them, or if he had known on some level, he had pushed it aside in his misguided aim for a goal that wasn't what he had thought.
It was hard to apologize to his old teammates, but it was harder still to apologize to Riku. He knew how much his little brother had looked up to him, and it was clear how much Riku still hurt over his sudden departure. If there was one thing Tomoe regretted more than anything else, it was how many times he had let Riku down, not just by leaving, but also all the times before that when Riku had wanted to train with him.
