Bonus Round 4: Quotes

Quotes

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

An oldie but a goodie—in this round, we draw inspiration from famous words said by other people.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." -Friedrich Nietzsche
    • The quote can come from almost anything—famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, etc.— but please don't quote personal conversations you've had or overheard.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

Taka stumbled slightly on his way up the stairs to the temple. He easily corrected himself, but stopped to check the basket in his grasp. It hadn’t been jostled enough for anything to spill out, but he wanted to make sure nothing was out of order. They were known for being a bit particular and wrathful after all, and aside from that, Taka just wanted them to enjoy the offering.

He shuffled a few things around, and when he finally felt pleased with the arrangement in the basket, he easily continued up the steps and up to the temple’s entrance. The opening was carved into the very rock of the mountain, and upon stepping over the threshold, Taka was engulfed in darkness. It wasn’t cold or dank though. Warmth emanated from the depths of the temple, like steam wafting off a hot bath. Legends said that the caverns of the temple wound deep into the mountain itself and the land below, looping and crossing itself in complex shapes and structures that were incomprehensible to mere mortals. Not that mortals were allowed to see it.

Taka had been coming to give tribute to the temple all his life, and had never stepped more than few feet into the rocky caverns.

Just as his eyes were beginning to adjust to the darkness, he felt a rushing of air around him, a familiar buzzing, and something solidified behind him.

Taka turned and smiled before bowing. “Fuji-sama.”

Fuji smiled brightly when he straightened back up. “Taka-san. You don’t need to be so formal. Have you forgotten me?”

Taka’s smile turned nervous. “Sorry. Of course I haven’t forgotten you. It hasn’t been that long, Fuji-sam--ah! I mean… Fujiko-chan.” Taka blushed slightly, but hoped Fuji couldn’t see it in the dark

She smiled anyway. “You never know, with you mortals. Time is so different for you.”

Taka was still blushing, failing at composing himself. “I was hoping it would be you to meet me this time.”

“Were you?” Fuji reached out, a hand cupping Taka’s cheek. He let himself rest some of the weight in her hand. Her free hand reached out as well, curiously running fingertips through his hair, both with affection and curiosity. “I’m sorry I kept you waiting, then. Unfortunately I had urgent matters to attend to.”

Taka chuckled slightly. “Of course. Fujiko-chan is much more important than I am.”

She moved a hand, pressing a finger into his lips to shush him, with just a tad too much force, but she was still smiling. “Don’t worry. I have a gift for your loyalty.”

Before Taka could try to ask what it was, she stepped away and around him. She walked towards the depths of the temple, and when Taka didn’t follow immediately, she instantly waved a hand for him to come.

Taka followed without question.

The tunnels were certainly circuitous, and treacherous in some places, as Taka soon found. Luckily he had been relieved of his basket early on, one of Fuji’s servants dressed in a flowing veil coming up and whisking the food away to places unknown. Taka didn’t bother worrying about it, and instead concerned himself with trying not to fall on the treacherous path that Fuji seemed to walk without a care. Taka’s eyes had almost fully adapted to the low light, at least, making it a bit easier to walk.

Or, maybe there was a different reason for that.

Taka paused as they passed through into a wide, gaping cavern. A glowing light filled the entire chamber, and Taka felt even warmer than he had for the rest of his time in the temple, but still not uncomfortably so. Taka took a few steps forward to investigate further, only for Fuji to grab his arm, halting him quickly.

“Careful,” Fuji said with her usual smile. Taka followed her gaze downwards to see that there was a pool at his feet; he would have stepped in it, too distracted by exploring the cavern with his eyes, if she hadn’t stopped him.

He bent down, looking at it. The pool itself was hexagonal, the lines of it far to crisp and exacting to be natural. The liquid inside it rippled slightly, a thick, warm gold.

“What is it?” Taka asked.

“It’s what we make of your offerings,” Fuji said, kneeling beside him. “Someday, you’ll bring us enough to completely fill all of the pools.” She reached down and swiped a finger over the surface, the thick liquid clinging to her fingertips.

Taka suddenly had the urge to lick it from her fingers, but bit his lip instead.

As if reading his thoughts, Fuji smiled and brought her finger closer to him.

Taka laughed nervously. “Well, what happens when you fill all of them?”

Fuji’s smile widened. “I guess you’ll just have to help us find out.” She swiped her finger over his lips, and Taka resisted no more, lapping up the sticky substance, and feeling that familiar warmth now spread through his entire body.
