Bonus Round 5: Clue

Clue

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Sometimes, all you need are a few little details to imagine something bigger. This round is inspired by a classic board game with a cast of colorful characters, but for SASO your only limits on "who", "where", and "with what" are what you can imagine (and the SASO fandom list, of course)!

This round closes on 5 August @ 7PM EDT. (Countdown Timer.)

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with the format of a Clue mystery - "[character] in the [location] with [item]", along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: Sawamura Daichi in the teachers' lounge with the Hello Kitty! lunchbox
    • The person in your prompt MAY be a member of your ship, but is not REQUIRED to be part of your ship. They must still be a named character from a SASO-nominated fandom.
    • Your place must be a physical location, not a state of being or a state of being. However, this location is not required to be real, nor must it be from the same setting as the characters.
    • The "item" used must be a physical object that the character can hold or manipulate.
    • Unlike the board game, your prompt is NOT required to imply murder. The scenario implied can be anything at all! (As always, please tag properly!)
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your Clue-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

Miyahara hums tunelessly as she kicks her feet in the tidal pool.

Everything is touched by the yellow summer sun here; the rocky outcrop radiates a warmth that curls pleasantly inside her chest, the ocean salt dries white and crystal under her hand where the tide had left sea grass and abalone shards strewn across the rock, glittering like stars under the bright blue sky. It’s been a series of beautiful days, and Miyahara knows that like all the other things summer has always given her, it won’t last forever.

A voice joins hers in humming, a thing so lovely and sweet, Miyahara can only think of the soft swell of the waves as they sculpt ribbons into the sand at dawn. “Hi again,” the voice hums brightly along with hers. “You came,” the voice continues in harmony. Miki is singing from the sand bank as she swims up and Miyahara has never felt a sound vibrate so light and breathless inside of her lungs; she wants that voice of bright summer sun and the deep blue sea to live inside of her lungs until there’s nothing left. She wonders if her own voice can even say a thing like that. She wonders if courage could ever live alongside such sweetness.

But Miyahara just nods seriously instead, twin tails moving like shadows across her bare shoulders as she says, “Of course I did. We had a date. And who else would bring you your favourite?”

The stories can’t even begin to describe the way a mermaid’s smile lights up like the sun scattering white and blinding off the waves at noon. Miki swims right up to Miyahara’s feet dipped in the water, and her fish tail flashes golden and green. “I brought snacks, too! I know we had that little accident last time, but I made sure that you can eat this. I saw the fisherman by the dock eating something similar, too.”

“You went to the docks?” Miyahara’s back goes stiff. Clouds pass over the water and she feels their shadows moving cold and grey, too.

“Don’t worry, I can take care of myself,” Miki smiles, and the way something sly and sharp touches the corner of her mouth, Miyahara believes her completely. “Besides, now I know that this is something we can share!”

Sea urchin. Slices of abalone. Miki takes them out slowly from a bag of sea grass and she peeks from under her bangs at Miyahara as she lays them out at her feet. Miki’s fingers pat fussily as she works and her gills are fluttering nervously, and Miyahara wonders at that.

“What are you thinking?” Miyahara asks. She’s slowly uncapping the thermos of jasmine tea that Miki loves so much, and the sweet floral of it lies like a strange taste of spring amidst all the heavy salt and sea that surrounds them; when something of the soft earth walks knowingly into the deep dark swell of the waves. Miyahara is not afraid.

“Come down into the water,” Miki breathes as she pulls herself up on her arms. Her beautiful voice is a hook of bone inside of Miyahara’s chest. “Eat the meal I brought for you and come down into the water with me.”

Miyahara knows that the bright yellow sun on the waves doesn’t go deep; she knows that right under the surface everything drops away to something dark and cold. But Miyahara is still not afraid. “Only for a little while,” Miyahara lies as she eats a slice of abalone.

“Only for a little while,” Miki lies, smiling brightly as she pulls Miyahara to her under the water.

this is so beautiful! i'm trying to think of more things to say but it's really everything- the feeling of the story, their dialogue, the ambiguous but not unhappy ending. miki fussing with the food and miyahara not being afraid. She wonders if courage could ever live alongside such sweetness. lovely!

thank you again so much!! I love the soft romance of supernatural creatures, especially merms, but... the sea runs deep, and you just can't know everything about it.
