Bonus Round 5: Clue

Clue

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Sometimes, all you need are a few little details to imagine something bigger. This round is inspired by a classic board game with a cast of colorful characters, but for SASO your only limits on "who", "where", and "with what" are what you can imagine (and the SASO fandom list, of course)!

This round closes on 5 August @ 7PM EDT. (Countdown Timer.)

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with the format of a Clue mystery - "[character] in the [location] with [item]", along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: Sawamura Daichi in the teachers' lounge with the Hello Kitty! lunchbox
    • The person in your prompt MAY be a member of your ship, but is not REQUIRED to be part of your ship. They must still be a named character from a SASO-nominated fandom.
    • Your place must be a physical location, not a state of being or a state of being. However, this location is not required to be real, nor must it be from the same setting as the characters.
    • The "item" used must be a physical object that the character can hold or manipulate.
    • Unlike the board game, your prompt is NOT required to imply murder. The scenario implied can be anything at all! (As always, please tag properly!)
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your Clue-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

***

There’s paper scattered everywhere, half-formed wishes, talismans, prayers, blessings. A multitude of things formed from earnest feelings and hopes, coalesced into a whirlwind that Manami stands in the middle of. Toudou’s sorting through them as he sets up to write more ofuda, a god’s blessing upon a household.

Toudou’s always been brilliant and beloved; Manami knows this. But it’s different when he gets to see it like this, the truth of it in his face. Maybe a part of it is because it’s New Year’s but Toudou has never been that kind of god, distant and untouchable. He cares deeply and sincerely about those who come to the shrine, who bring him offerings. Even for those who don’t, simply because they are part of his purview. As for the people, some of it is tradition yes, respect for customs that run through generations, but much of it is also genuine. Manami’s never met a god who was quite so beloved before.

Toudou’s always been easy to love; Manami’s known this since the day Toudou had become his mentor, however unwilling he’d been at that time. Toudou has never tried to restrain him, only sighed and complained when he had to pick up after Manami. Girls will never like you if you’re like this, Manami! He’d remembered laughing it off then, but then he’d never told Toudou it wasn’t girls he was interested in. It had always been the mountain first; the peak, the climb, the feeling of being painfully, breathtakingly alive. And then somewhere, somehow, it had been Toudou.

You should be free, you know. Toudou tells him. Like he knows that Manami’s not made to be tied down, earth solid and mountain steady the way Toudou is. You should do it because you want to, not out of obligation. It doesn’t suit you. His hand is careful as he writes out blessing after blessing, talismans for the new year. Manami watches the ink dry, watches Toudou’s face and his hands, steady, steady as the brush slides over paper.

He wonders if he will ever learn to be like that, reliable and unwavering the way Toudou is. Toudou only laughs at him and reminds him that the gods have always been fickle creatures, himself no exception. There is something tired and more wistful in his smile, and Manami is reminded again that Toudou is older than he knows. Not every god is like me, Manami. His voice is a touch wry, but it’s true. Manami’s certainly never met another god who posed as the shrine’s kannushi. Manami can’t help but smile even as Toudou launches into a rundown on all the gossip in town, of Matsuda-san’s grandchild moving in with her and oh did you know Kawai-san will be receiving a blessing soon, and Manami, get your hands moving, you wanted to apprentice here, you better work for it.

So Manami sets to work, writing blessing after blessing. He might never be what Toudou is, but he thinks there is much to admire, and much to learn from him. Maybe Manami’s a little bit in love with Toudou, but he thinks that’s a secret he can keep. Patience is the one thing he has in abundance, after all.
