Kageyama/Oikawa, G, no tags, 455 words im sorry about the Free!reference lmao but that's what I associate water with now???
Kageyama should have known Oikawa had ulterior motives when he suggested they go on a date to the aquarium. Oikawa is talented, ambitious, and charming, but his love for KyoAni's swimming anime is not exactly common knowledge unless you really pay attention. Kageyama likes to consider himself as someone who pays attention to Oikawa, given that he spent months trying to convince Oikawa to date him in the first place.
"How precious," Oikawa says when they're watching the workers feed a flock of penguins. It's the first thing he's said since dragging Kageyama to the shark exhibit, where he spent half an hour pressed to the glass. When Kageyama makes a humming noise in agreement, Oikawa looks at him. "Come on, Tobio-chan! Don't you find any of this cute?"
"Eh." Kageyama's mind whirs as he searches for the right answer. "The whale in the gift shop was cute."
They had, indeed, passed by two gift shops already. Now, Oikawa gives him a measured look before looping an arm through Kageyama's. "Okay, let's go look for that whale."
The whale thing is a lie, of course. Kageyama knows Oikawa's favorite character from Free! is the one who resembles a whale, so that had seemed like an appropriate answer. Now, standing inside of the gift shop and watching Oikawa hug stuffed orcas of various sizes, Kageyama feels slightly jealous.
"Which one is cuter, Tobio-chan?"
Kageyama arbitrarily points to the medium sized one. He doesn't expect it when Oikawa deposits said toy in Kageyama's arms and bounces away. Kageyama follows dumbly with the orca in his arms until finding his date (boyfriend?) near the home goods section, examining a display of starfish shaped plates.
"I like the one on the right, but the mint green is prettier!" Oikawa holds up two almost identical plates that make Kageyama squint.
"Are you using them to hold your keys?" Kageyama asks, thinking about the small table Oikawa has in the doorway of his apartment.
All he receives is an amused look. "They’re for my figures.”
“Oh,” Kageyama says and lamely accepts the plate from Oikawa. He blinks when Oikawa returns to the original area and picks up a dolphin plush. Kageyama lifts the orca. “What about this one?”
“Mako-chan is for you,” Oikawa feigns a disappointed sigh. “Haru-chan is for me.”
Kageyama tries his best not to scowl. “Don’t you like the orca more?”
Oikawa just laughs and pats Kageyama’s cheek. “Yeah, but the dolphin is my favorite… I wonder why.”
Kageyama has no clue what Oikawa is referring to, but he feels satisfied as long as Oikawa is pleased. The dolphin thing is irrelevant, Kageyama thinks, as long as Oikawa likes him.
